Vancouver Newsy Personalities
I’ve been watching the news a lot more recently, due to the water warnings and storms. I usually catch Global Morning News before I leave for work and in the evenings it’s a toss up, really. John enjoys leaving CNN on in the background while he goes about his daily tasks.
I grew up with Pamela Martin and Tony Parsons, doing BCTV news. A couple years back Pamela teamed up with Bill Good on CTV and Tony joined the Global TV team. They’re my usual faves to watch since, well like I said, I’ve been watching them deliver the news in this town for over 20 years. There was also Jennifer Mathers but when her hubby, Mr. Brian Burke moved to Anaheim - she went with.
You then have the newer, shinier faces such as the infamously liked or disliked, “Best of Vancouver” Tamara Taggart and her weather report and the uber-buff Kevin Newman doing Global National News.
There’s Steve Darling, the blue eyed sweetie from Global Morning news (that’s usually the target of many jokes on CFOX’s morning radio show) and the quirky witty duo on CityTV, Simi and Dave on Breakfast Television will crack you up. I’m partial to the Bruce Williams from A Channel news, mostly because in the evening during Jeopardy he comes on and does “Watch & Win”. For the next while they’re giving away Canucks tickets so I’ll be sure to tune in… yeah I have the contest number on speed dial.
There’s not really anyone who really grates my nerves, I know John enjoys watching some of the Seattle stations’ newscasts in the evenings because their “personalities” are a little more… loud, it’s rather amusing, really. And I think that we both get a kick out of the personification of CTV’s helicopter “Chopper 9″, it gets its own spot during the opening credits of every show.
I have to say though my favourite, and possible new anchorman-crush has got to be Chris Gailus. He’s the new Global Weekend News guy and seems to be doing a pretty good job filling in some shifts during the week. I have to admit though, I think 90% of the appeal is because he reminds me entirely of Casey from Sportsnight.

This morning I had the news on , which is referred to in my house as ‘a mummy show’ and Alexis said..’hey , I like the news now, it’s kind of fun’. Oh and in the mornings I love Simi and Dave, they are so funny.

Tamara Taggert *gushes* and it’s rather sickening. And Kevin Newman looks kind of sleazy. Other than that, I don’t know the news reporters by name.
In the morning, I tune into Canada A.M. because it’s nice and Canada- (or you could say Ontario-)centric and that leads directly into NYC-centric Live! (Regis and Kelly). Lol.

How can you even stomach television news period?

Well we did see the Airbus 380 land at YVR about 5 times last night (within a 5 minute period) while flipping through the TV news. At one point I asked John to ‘please make it stop’.
I find it’s a nice break from the computer, where we get most of our news anyway, before or after work.

I like turning my brain off some times, and that’s the only way you can really watch TV news. At the same time, I like being a critic. Especially that weather guy in Seattle when HE STARTS TALKING ABOUT THE WEATHER REALLY LOUD. WOW! RAIN!!

I’d like to add that I love anderson cooper 360. But only because I loved him in the ‘Mole’ and I have a thing for him.
Television news tells you where the traffic accidents are on your way to work and which schools are closed because of the weather.
It has it’s uses.

I was always a bigger fan of Dan, rather than Casey on Sportsnight. But nonetheless, I’m just a huge fan of references to one of my favorite tv shows ever.
(Though, we should probably take into account that I’m in school to become a sports broadcaster.)

Ah, you didn’t mention Squire Barnes or John McKeachie! Those were my 2 faves growing up. I’m sure you wouldn’t have crushes on them tho!
I don’t watch world news anymore, but when I grew up watching News Hour, I always got a kick out of Tony Parsons. He constantly had a serious face, but ONCE IN A WHILE, somebody would get a smile or chuckle out of him, and we’d all laugh at that. Squire used to make him laugh the most!

Not even touching the sportscasters! Don Taylor, Shorthouse… (the old Sports Page crew) would have ‘em all beat hands down. McKeachie - totally grew up watching him as a part of the Tony/Pamela team. Squire is still on, and still pretty cheeky.

Know what you mean. I grew up watching Pamela Martin and Tony Parsons doing the evening news (we must be around the same age). Met Tony once. Totally recognizable and deep voice, but he’s quite the shorty.
Simi Sara and Dave Gerry CRACK me up! Their banter is hilarious.
I still have not warmed up to the geek giving sports news… “Squeaky” Barnes. Just…not….

I could’nt say I grew up with Pamela Martin, although we did more or less see each other in our different employment positions.
Pamela at that time was a CKNW reporter, and I recall speaking to a road sweeper outiside the courthouse, who Pamela followed me afterwards to have a chat with him, I thought the gesture for her to meet this road sweeper an also chat to him and film it, was indeed a delight to see, most people would pass by the city sweeper, a person I always chatted too, he was no different from you or I, most enjoyable, and Pamela must have found him so.
