MSM, The Province, and Blogger Link Love

Comments 4 by Rebecca Bollwitt

I was viewing my incoming links this morning and caught this one, which seems pretty interesting. If you head to the main website for The Province newspaper, which is Canada.com you’ll see on the top right “Province Blogs“.

Yesterday they introduced their brand new Newsroom:

We’ve started The Newsroom in an effort to keep in close touch with our online audience. We’ll keep you posted on stories we’re working on and direct you to other stories on the web that you might find interesting, even if they won’t be appearing on our main news site. The blog will also provide a quick and easy way to update breaking stories while our reporters are busy tracking down more details…

…Full disclosure: We got this idea from our friends at the National Post and their Posted blog. We liked it so much we decided to do something similar — with their full blessing of course.

Once you’re in their Community Blog area they have their featured blogs in the right sidebar as well as “Vancouver Area Blogs”: Beyond Robson, Metroblogging Vancouver, Urban Vancouver, Rant!Vancouver, The Vancouverite, Miss 604. They also have their own contributors.

We have a growing slate of bloggers. Canucks, Lions, arts, books, etc. Any new posts to any of those blogs will appear in the top right corner of our main page, so keep an eye on it.

This is the first step the province-wide publication has taken to this degree, online. I’m flattered by the link and more content is always good but I’ll be checking in to see how their progress is going over the next little while.

They are asking for feedback and also links so if you do have a Vancouver-centric blog, send it along to get some mainstream media link love.

I’m going to do the same. But I don’t know how much of my blog qualifies as Vancouver-centric. Perhaps my restaurant reviews?

So tell us, Oh Wise One, who the hell reads The Province anyway?
Our major print media is all cloned in Winnipeg these days and
they’re all on the same page because Mr. Asper says so.
That’s why blogs and bloggers are more fun – we’re cheap,
sometimes nasty, but always get it done!
Check out Urban Vancouver for an example….
