And why do we have to opt out? The Yellow Pages isn't a mandatory service of any sort. They should be asking us to opt in. Fat chance I'm going to lift a finger to get myself off their list.

Paul - unfortunately, that red dot doesn't do much. Most of the flyers and such that you receive in your mailbox aren't "junk mail" - the advertisers have paid a few for delivery, and as such they are considered actual mail by Canada Post and they MUST be delivered. I worked a summer doing this hateful job, and Canada Post was very specific that "no junk mail" signs do NOT apply to this type of mail.

you can also place a red dot on the inside of your mailbox if you don't want unaddressed junk mail - to remove even more wasteful paper from being delivered to your home!

Before we give them too much credit, let's remember:

* It took them until halfway through 2009 to implement this program. Forgive the unintended pun, but the writing has been on the wall for at least five years on this shift.

* It's opt-out, when it absolutely should be opt-in. What fraction of Canadians will go to the trouble to opt-out?

And lastly, do they really need a (instruction-free, I might add) captcha on the opt-out page? That's yet another barrier to the process, and something plenty of older Canadians may never have seen.

I'm happy that they have this option as I do a lot of my searches online but I still like having the paper format around.

I find the online searches handy but the info is not always correct. For example: Online my current landline number is listed under my info and its former owners. Yet in the phonebook the number haven't been listed since 2007.

@Rob - in actual fact, depending on where you live, Yellow Pages directories get delivered at different times. For example, in Vancouver, the directories get delivered in February, while in Montreal, they get delivered in September (don't quote me on that, I'm going by memory).

So, to answer your question, it depends on where you live and when your directory gets delivered. However, either way, if you don't want to receive the book, you should opt out, that way it's already done for next year if it's too late for this year.

I'm glad the opt-out option is being offered, but I am confused about the timeline. The report says that the new Yellowpages are being distributed this fall and that the deadline to remove your name from the delivery list is November 19th. But the Yellowpages website says that: Requests placed within less than 60 days of the initial delivery date will only be valid for the following year.

Is it too late to opt out for this year's distribution?
