No matter what direction I take in life
As a young child I suffered from extreme anxiety. The anxiety would make playing with others and going to school impossible. It took a huge toll on not only myself but also my mother. As a nurse she was unable to give me the intensive support I needed, so she quit her profession and volunteered in my classroom. She did this without hesitation or resentment. She continued to support me in this way until a position opened up in the school as an Educational Assistant. For the next 25 years she continued to support students like myself until last year when she was laid off. Please help me thank my mother for all she has given me and other children.

I’d like to share a story about my mum. In 2010, life was tragically interrupted when Dad experienced cardiac issues consequently led to painful years of hospitalisation and recovery. My Mum stuck with Dad through thick and thin, visiting Dad everyday in the ICU unit of the hospital. I feel incredibly blessed and grateful to have such a loving, caring and selfless Mum. Everything she does, she does for her family. Growing up, the braids, ponytails and matching ribbons styled with so much care. Everything she gives is unconditional.

My Mom’s mother passed away when she was just 3 years old… She has truly valued her role as a Mother and has worked tirelessly and lovingly (and still does at 80 years of age) for her family and others (she volunteers at the Church and hospital).
My mom taught me how to navigate through life, which has served me really well even after she’s gone.
Aside from my real mom, there are many ladies who were like mothers to me from my church in the university. They helped me out as a student when I stayed at their homes as a dormer. It’s because of the love and care that I received from them that I decided to open my home to others who might be in need of a place to stay. I also befriended international students visiting Toronto as I know it’s not easy to be far away from your family in an unfamiliar place abroad. Through this, I’ve made friends with some Japanese students, who recently graduated from their university in Japan. I am blessed to have enjoyed being nurtured not only by my mom but also by other ladies in my life growing up.

My mom was born the youngest of 5 in Ireland and made her way west to North America when she was a young adult. She was a dancer, became a great mom of 2, and did her best to raise honest, healthy, happy children. We lost my brother, her first born, a few years back to Cystic Fibrosis, and it has left a big hole in her heart.
