    The Amazing Hunt Vancouver Recap

    May 5th, 2008 by Miss604 | 3 Comments »

The Amazing Hunt 2008Luckily, we didn’t do much that involved exercising fingers so I am fully capable of writing this post. On the other hand, I know Vancouver Marathon runners must be thinking I’m crazy because the 7 hours of The Amazing Hunt totally kicked my butt.

It could have been the yogurt we had to chug, or the up-hill sprint, but regardless of my immobility in these days after the race it was once again a huge success thanks to Bill and his team.

Not to give away too much about the race, just because some of the challenges and clues could be used in future events, here’s a quick recap:

  • At 8:45 in the pouring rain we took off from the Pacific Coliseum and headed to New Brighton Park for our first clue which lead us over to Trout Lake / John Hendry Park.

John and I were the last team to arrive to that point although within about 45 second I had completed the Road Block, which was to dig in the sand near certain logs and find a buried clue. Covered in sand, we took off with our next clue, maybe 3 spots behind the lead.

  • We made our way to the Avalon Dairy and ran into a Detour (if you’re familiar with The Amazing Race you’ll notice the clues have similar titles and themes). We had to chose between chugging a bottle of milk, or sharing 500ml of yogurt. Now, I have NEVER tried yogurt in my life and the very thought of it makes me gag, however for the sake of the race we decided to avoid the milk and gulped down the yogurt.
  • Coming into the first pit stop, John and I were in first place, although with teams starting in one minute intervals after the break, we knew we had to work hard to stay on top. The rain pelted down on us as we waiting to begin the next leg.
  • After a few more clues and destinations we had to get from Commercial Drive, to South Main Street, then back to downtown Vancouver (picking up a few clues and solving a puzzle in the middle). This “neighbourhood to neighbourhood” search with no directions given was a part of a new type of clue called a Roundabout. The idea is to reach both vicinities and search for two pieces that, when combined, will help you figure out where to go next.
  • The Amazing Hunt 2008

  • The traffic on Main Street heading back towards our second pit stop at Science World was just killer. Once we got down to False Creek parking was just as tough and John and I clocked in at the second pit stop in 7th place (out of 10). This is the longer edition of the Amazing Hunt in which I’ve participated, which is sort of good because we would have finished on a low note if that was the final destination.
  • The Amazing Hunt 2008Heading into Chinatown, we came across another Detour where we had to chose between locating a show with certain foreign characters on its sign, or going to a specific store and purchasing a certain product.

From my experience on the Granville Island race with Jenny, it’s always better to take the task where you know where you are going, because wandering around aimlessly isn’t very fun. We sprinted down Keefer street, picked up the item (Soy Tofu Dessert) and upon returning we had to devour the entire thing (layering it on top of the yogurt in our bellies from the dairy.

  • After the tofu dessert, we ended up at another location where we had to Merge with another team to complete the task. We were given the choice between certain flavours of gelato (wasabi or curry) and had to finish the entire quart in order to move on. Now, on top of the yogurt and the soy dessert John and I struggled although compared to the team that we paired up with who went to McDonald’s during the last pit stop and ate sundaes, we were a little better off.
  • The next clue was located somewhere John and I knew how to find right away. Other teams had to go into shops and ask for help or use a phonebook, so at least I felt good about my city knowledge even though our driving and navigation wasn’t as fast.
  • Finally, our race to the finish took place at English Bay, near the Inukshuk. By this time the rain had ceased and we had the most beautiful backdrop. Upon crossing the finish line in 6th place John was asked if he had fun. Having just burped up curry gelato during the sprint to the mat he bellowed, “no! not at all!” and I hope they knew he was joking.
  • It was another successful event with great twists and turns although here’s what I’d kind of like to see in the future:

  • Fewer eating challenges, especially involving dairy. For the Surrey race we had to gulp down a jar of buckwheat honey. That was gross but at least it wasn’t a) as large a quantity as the curry gelato b) it was the only eating challenge on the race.
  • I’d like to see more Road Blocks or Detours involving puzzles or mind games. I really liked the digging Road Block but having maybe just one more in the second leg would allow the other teammate to complete something while you could cheer them on and keep up your spirits.

  • John looks WAY TOO happy

All in all, the race was a great success. No one gets eliminated (although time penalties can be incurred) and the teams on every race I’ve run have been friendly, supportive, just competitive enough to issue a Yield or trash talk a bit, and there’s always laughter and good spirits.

The next Amazing Hunt will be taking place in Langley August 16th, followed by the North Shore race October 4th. If you’d like to sign up check the website for details, registration includes a swanky red and yellow race t-shirt as well. I think it’s a great bonding experience for siblings, parents, friends, and couples, and you can also organize entire company or group teambuilding races with various courses offered like “Downtown” or “Vancouver Transit”.

As this is race is “reality series” styled, there will also be a wonderfully produced video of the entire race available on YouTube in a couple weeks, which I’ll share unless there are gratuitous shots of me sucking back 500ml of yogurt.

    The Amazing Hunt: Vancouver Edition

    May 2nd, 2008 by Miss604 | 2 Comments »

In less than 24 hours John and I will be running and driving through the streets of Vancouver during the first Amazing Hunt of 2008.

The Amazing Hunt is an urban adventure racing series modeled after popular reality television shows. You will get to set out as teams of two to embark on an exhilarating quest.

We have checked the blog to find out our starting point will be the Pacific Coliseum at 8:45am. From there, who knows where the race will take us. There are 11 teams this time around so that should provide for some good competition. If you are out and about tomorrow and spot teams of two looking lost, anxious, or showing some strange food in their mouth in record time, it’s probably our crew.

I’m going to miss my usual teammate (Sis604) but she’ll be back for a race later this year.

I’ll have a recap up later in the weekend on this post, which will hopefully be a triumphant victory speech although with The Amazing Hunt, all the fun comes from simply participating.

The Amazing Hunt is on for 2008

    April 13th, 2008 by Miss604 | 3 Comments »

Last year my sister and I participated twice in The Amazing Hunt, once in a foot race Granville Island and the other in Surrey (with car travel). Fashioned after the popular CBS and Emmy-winning reality show The Amazing Race, this hyper-local adventure challenge tests your brains and brawn with tasks that take place in a handful of cities across Metro Vancouver.

    The Amazing Hunt

Since September 2004, The Amazing Hunt introduces this new racing style which provides an opportunity for you to discover a city’s hidden treasure… its culture, landmarks, and history. Our goal is to create a positive and healthy lifestyle in your community while promoting local tourism, business, and charity. [The Amazing Hunt]

    2008 Race Dates and Locations:

  • May 3, Vancouver
  • August 16, Langley and Fort Langley
  • October 4, North and West Vancouver
  • Bill Lin and his team also create special one-off events and races, which are ideal for company team building exercises.

This morning John and I signed up for the Vancouver edition on May 3rd so we’ll be checking in on the blog closer to the date to find out our exact starting point in the city.

Do you think you know Vancouver better than us? Do you think you can outrun John? Do you think you can eat more buckwheat honey by the spoonful in a single sitting than me? Sign up your team of two for any of The Amazing Hunt races this season and I guarantee you’ll have a blast!

The Amazing Race 12 Blog - Episode 2

    November 11th, 2007 by Miss604 | 4 Comments »

This is my half-assed attempt to semi-sorta live blog episode two of The Amazing Race tonight, from Victoria.

(See Episode 1’s blog for some back story)

My names for the teams in this blog and the order in which they will leave the pit stop:

    1. AH - Brother/Sister
    2. KV - Goth Couple
    3. RTK - The New Hippies
    4. LJ - … no clever nicknames yet
    5. ND - Grandson/Gramps
    6. SJ - The New Beauty Queens / The Blonds
    7. RC - Father/Daughter “You are a disappointment!”
    8. KP - Lesbian Ministers
    9. MJ - “Hot Sisters” - per John
    10. NJ - The Cranky Couple

The teams take off from Ireland when their first clue from the pit stop instructs them to head to the Shannon Airport and fly to Amsterdam.

Once they arrive in Amsterdam they need to take a train, then find a particular bridge upon which they will find their next clue.

At the airport everyone manages to find a flight to Dublin however the number of seats from Dublin to Amsterdam are limited. At the connection, Ronald & Christina and Grampa/Grandson jockey for stand-by positions meanwhile AH, The Goths, JL and the cranky couple (their names escape me right now) are on their way to the Netherlands.

    COMMERCIAL

All teams have managed to find connecting flights to Amsterdam where they hop on trains en route the the clue. AH are ahead of the pack, and the first to find the DETOUR.

Hoist it: Teams need to use a rope and pulley system to hoist 5 pieces of furniture up to an apartment building.

Hunt it: Teams walk a few blocks to sort through thousands of bikes to find colour-coded bikes, which they must then ride 5 miles to receive their next clue.

Honestly, Hunt it sounds like a HUGE pain, it’s all PURE luck on these tasks - “find a needle in a haystack”. Some teams could get it right away and others could be there for hours.

AH head to Hunt it, while the Goths head to Hoist it along with JL, who end up completing the task first. After DETOURs are complete teams must travel by bus to get their next clue, located in a field.

The Blonds head to Hoist it with Nathan and Jennifer (the cranky couple) while Gramps/Grandson do Hunt it.

AH complete Hunt it and ride their bikes to the bus meanwhile the Blonds pretend to faint, “I need a chiropractor,” and Nathan & Jennifer switch roles in Hoist it, as the Hippies (RTK) struggle as well with that task.

A bunch of teams catch up to each other while waiting for a bus, leaving without the Goths who race to catch it. Meanwhile, RC, KP and MJ are just landing in Amsterdam.

    COMMERCIAL

RTK get the hang of Hoist it while JL get off the bus and come across the next clue, alongside the Blonds and the cranky couple.

ROAD BLOCK - Only one person per team can do this task - Ditch Vault. They must use a pole to vault across a ditch, landing both feet on the other side of the mud pit to retrieve the clue. The clue instructs teams to chose a Dutch cargo bike looking for a drop off site, which will lead them to the pit stop for this leg of the race.

At this point the teams are very staggered, pretty much in groups of three teams. The Blonds comment on the cranky couple’s success thus far, “that little bitch did it!”. J and L hit the mat first being the winners of this leg of the race. Followed by the cranky couple, NJ then the Blonds.

RC and KP decide to take on Hunt it, searching through thousands of bikes. Ronald pretty much rags on his daughter the entire time, while Kate and Pat look on, indulging in the other teams’ breakdowns. Meanwhile the Goths, Gramps/Grandson, the Hippies and AH reach the Road Block/Ditch Vault.

    COMMERCIAL

The Hippies complete the Ditch Vault but ride past Phil at the mat while the Goths check in - AH and The Hippies make it in as #5 and #6. The Hot Sisters breeze through the Ditch Vault and check in as team #7. Gramps, after stripping down to his skivvies in the mud check in as team #8 while Ronald criticizes his daughter… again… to pieces. They complete the task and check in #9, leaving Kate and Pat as the only team yet to finish.

    1. LJ - … no clever nicknames yet
    2. NJ - The Cranky Couple
    3. SJ - The New Beauty Queens / The Blonds
    4. KV - Goth Couple
    5. AH - Brother/Sister
    6. RTK - The New Hippies
    7. MJ - “Hot Sisters” - per John
    8. ND - Grandson/Gramps
    9. RC - Father/Daughter “You are a disappointment!”
    ELIMINATED - 10. KP - Lesbian Ministers
