WPtouch Theme Preview, WordPress on the iPhone

    April 28th, 2008 by Miss604 | 10 Comments »

The good folks at Brave New Code, specifically Dale Mugford and Duane Storey (or “D Squared” as I have just this minute decided to call them) have been working on a theme for mobile viewing of your WordPress blog.

    Here’s how it works:

  • Coming this Wednesday WPtouch will be released to the world
  • Head to BraveNewCode to download and install like you would any other WP plugin
  • In your dashboard, edit the plugin by going to Options > WPtouch
  • Select which pages you’d like to be added to your menu
  • Chose an icon for each page or upload your own
  • Grab an iPhone or iPod Touch and check out how hot your blog looks to mobile users
  • I’ve had a chance to poke around the beta version this evening, here’s a look at my site on the iPhone with WPtouch installed:

I have to say it’s pretty slick. Duane also got me to add a page called “Photos” which was then immediately populated with thumbnails of my recent Flickr photos. Keep an eye out for WPtouch this week and also check out Brave New Code cause these innovative guys are mighty good at what they do.

Update: Brave New Code just launched! WPtouch is now available for your mobile WordPressing pleasure!

RickRoll Flash Mob in London Today

    April 11th, 2008 by Miss604 | 2 Comments »

One week ago I wrote about a RickRoll flash mob taking place on April 11th in Liverpool St Station at 6:00pm. Seeing as how that’s 8 hours ahead of us here on the Pacific coast of Canada I’d say things should be getting underway fairly soon.

Bring a camera, bring a detachable quiff, bring the lyrics so you don’t have to embarrass yourself or the dedicated Rickrollers by humming through the verses and only singing out loud when the song gets to the chorus… Get down there and share the love: it’s not rock and roll, it’s Rickroll. [Londonist]

If you’d like to check out the live action I’ve been linked off a site that lists someone’s QIK video stream, and they hope to catch some of the hilarity that is bound to ensue.

They only last a minute and a half but here’s a video of today’s Rickmob in London courtesy of Jamie Coomber’s Qik Stream.

Taking RickRolling to a New Level

    April 4th, 2008 by Miss604 | 7 Comments »

In recent weeks have you been forwarded a link by a trusted friend, colleague or contact only to have a YouTube version of “Never Gonna Give You Up” appear and auto-play in its place? If so, you’ve been Rick Roll’d.

Rick Roll: When what you think is a link to something you want to see actually directs you to a video of Rick Astley singing “Never Gonna Give You Up.”[Urban Dictionary]

I think the ultimate RickRoll master of the Metro Vancouver are has got to be John Biehler, he’s got me about 4 times already - one of which was in a comment on Alexa’s photo.

John said Adam Curry RickRoll’d listeners of the Daily Source Code the other day as well, but leave it to those clever folks in England who have now stepped it up another notch with “Rick Mob“:

Here’s a date for your diary - Friday 11th April, Liverpool Street Station, the plan is to be there for 6pm and sing the Astley classic Never Going To Give You - to effectively combine flashmobbing and rickrolling into one horrific combo, and rickroll an entire train station. [Going Underground]

In an LA Times interview Astley was pretty much wondering why anyone would want to hear such ‘cheese’ (or ‘naff’ as he puts it), and seemed most concerned about it embarrassing his daughter. Nevertheless, if you’ve been RickRoll’d, I know how you feel.

[Thanks to Roland for the heads up on the flash mob.]

    Twitter Colour Wars

    March 20th, 2008 by Miss604 | 6 Comments »

A while back anyone using the popular microblogging tool Twitter may have noticed that their contact’s avatars sported some peas. This was in support of the Susan Reynolds and the Frozen Pea Fund, and was actually for a good cause. Now a new trend has surfaced in recent days that has Twitter users pitted against each other in mini gangs, showing their colours.

What exactly is the war over or about? That’s yet to be determined. The very green team seems to be in the lead with a pretty extensive cast list thus far. I was tempted to join them too.. but I figured if we all joined their team, then there really wouldn’t be any competition! [iJustine]

iJustine also created team #FF1CAE, and her helpful template for anyone else wishing to join team pink was quickly overthrown by someone from team “Dodger Blue”.

So far this morning I’ve seen the rise of team “Red and White”, and Aqua Team, and also SheGeeks have an entire breakdown of each team’s manpower: red, green, yellow, blue, orange, pink, gold, off-white, and plaid.

Meanwhile over at Tech Moz, the have a detailed graph showing the support for each colour team to date.

It seems all you need to do to join a team is change your avatar to include your chosen colour in the background or under your image, across the bottom. The sentiment around the web so far seems to be that Tweeps or Twitterers (those on Twitter) have a lot of time on their hands, are bored, and must have nothing better to do. Quick! Time for a Steve Jobs keynote… or another Zuckerberg interview.

    Mental Auto-Complete and Shortcuts

    March 10th, 2008 by Miss604 | 10 Comments »

I sometimes find that my fingers go faster on he keyboard than my brain can spew out thoughts. I’m often auto-completing words that begin the same as a frequently typed word I’m thinking about, but in the end - they end up as typos. Example: Chick Flick becomes Chick Flickr, Dance becomes Duane. Such a thing could make for an amusing post, if left unaltered.

On a similar note, I sat down at my mother’s PC the other day and realized that over the last year my fingers had been completely retrained to use Macs. I would normally place them a certain way to open another tab in Firefox, however my left ring finger now had to extend a little further to press the CTRL button, with the “T” following it. If this isn’t the proper finger positioning per grade school keyboarding, I have no excuse aside from the fact that I taught myself to type expediently before such a class was taken.

Indulge my geekiness here while I share my top five basic/fave keyboard shortcuts that are conducive to speedy computing:

  • Command (open Apple) + T: Opens a new browsing tab in Firefox or Safari
  • Command + 2: Automatically inserts the “@” when replying to someone on Twitter, using Twitterific
  • Ctrl + A: When composing a blog post in WordPress it pops up the link box for easy pasting of a link (not working with F3B3)
  • Command + Shift + T: Re-opens a recently closed browser tab (thanks to Tod for showing me this at BarCamp)
  • Command + C or X or V: Copy, Cut or Paste. It may seem simple but man, it makes life easier
  • Command + Z: Undo. Need I say more about the importance of Undo?
  • Function + Delete: Backspace… in reverse
  • Okay, that was more than five, but feel free to share if you have any of your own - for Mac or PC.

    Blabberize Yourself

    March 3rd, 2008 by Miss604 | 7 Comments »

I can see this being popular with those who have pets, my goodness the hilarity that may ensue. However tonight I decided to Blabberize Duane, while John looked on.

Thanks to Alan Levine’s session at Northern Voice about 50 Web 2.0 Ways to Tell a Story, I’ve been tinkering with some of his suggested media tools. Here’s what I managed to accomplish tonight while scooping a photo of Duane from his Flickr, and reading one of his blog posts verbatim.

As I said in the notes of this Blabber… hopefully next time this won’t be entirely unfunny, but at least I now know what I’m doing.

What is a Strutta and is the game on yet?

    February 29th, 2008 by Miss604 | 6 Comments »

Ever since last summer at BarCamp, or maybe even before that, there’s been a buzz around town about Strutta. They’ve hosted all of the Launch Party events so far and even supplied me with one of my best-fitting t-shirts to date back in November. But just what exactly is Strutta?

Top secret Strutta demosLast night they held an event for some of their closest and most trusted friends and colleagues, however they were sure to write some rules of conduct on the white board in the corner, “…Feel free to blog what you see tonight….but….”.

First things first, the Strutta crew is comprised of many hard working people like Danny Robinson, Maura Rogers, Lyal Avery, Jordan Behan, Alexa Booth, and all those brainiacs behind the scenes that don’t get website bios with a clever headshot.

I’ve known Jordan since his TellTenFriends days and have come to know Maura over the course of the Launch Party series (and I think they’re both pretty great, especially since Maura is originally from Massachusetts). Lyal and Alexa are also always to fun to bump into at events around town. So now that we have the people covered, here’s what they’ve been up to.

    Strutta.com

With Strutta you’ll be able to view, upload or record videos on the spot but that’s all a part of something a little bigger. The idea is to participate in games, and your video is your entry into that game. Do you have the best celebrity impersonation? Record or upload your video and allow others on Strutta to say if yes, you are the best OR they can submit their own video and try to outdo and outrank you. Think YouTube, meets Hot or Not, meets Digg but it’s more sophisticated than that, and what they have so far looks really slick. It’s also complete with many more functions (which I cannot divulge) and there are some key components to the UI that make it sleek, smooth, and just plain clever in its design.

The Strutta folks aren’t quite ready to release to the world but the shroud of secrecy will slowly be lifted over the next few weeks. There are bugs to fix, and kinks to iron out, but this is all a natural progression and will add even more value to their product when it’s ready to launch. Watch for a post on their blog from Jordan, including some screenshots and I gotta hand it to these guys, the parties, the fab Gastown office with the amazing mountain view, and now they’ll have a great product to boot.

    Update:Top secret super screenshot!

Geek Girl TShirts Where Are You?

    February 28th, 2008 by Miss604 | 12 Comments »

A while back Duane and I were on iChat talking about how it was almost lunch time. We exchanged some html talk like *hunger* me */hunger* (replacing * with the brackets of course) and it soon evolved into some php code that I simply can’t share because it may further screw up the format of this blog post. Needless to say, it was really fun… and uber nerdy.

I was browsing around this evening on the lookout for some new nerd-friendly t-shirts after being inspired by this shirt last week and a conversation Meg had on Twitter this morning. Unfortunately all I found was a serious lack of geeky t-shirts for women.

I’m not talking about the pink (and don’t get my wrong, I like pink) and sparkley “Geek Girl” shirts. I don’t want a shirt that states the obvious, I want something that would instantly display my geek-cred not one of those “*tits* */tits*” tops. (again, replacing * with the brackets)

Shirts like “I (heart) my Geek” are also cute, but I don’t want something that says I’m with a geek. ThinkGeek almost had me with “#!/usr/bin/girl“, “#include love.h” or with their babydoll version of “There’s no place like 127.0.0.1” until they threw on the ruby slippers.

This isn’t about feeling the need to validate my geekdom with a message t-shirt, it’s just that you know, I happen to own a few select message tees. They’re fun to have in the closet to bust out every now and then.

I think I can almost dig this little number from Cafepress, “Roses are #FF0000“, and upon flipping through the pages there are a few more gems like: “Turn me On“, with a cute little Mac power button, “Mac Chick Pro“, and okay I even got a chuckle out of “There’s Nothing Funny About Tubgirl“. I also like the pinup concept, but not sure I like this design in particular.

From Jinx I found the following that were pretty decent: “I’m only here because my server is down“, and “Arrogant Linux Elitist“.

I also giggled quite often looking at Syswear, however it was more of a sympathetic giggle followed by a groan: “That’s funny, it worked on my machine“, and “It’s not a bug, it’s a feature“.

But seriously, where else can I find some fun geek shirts, made for women, that are not gamer talk, contain no references to MySpace but just plain old… geeky?
