Thursday Morning Link Fest: Long Weekend Warmup

    March 20th, 2008 by Miss604 | 3 Comments »

I think the last time I only posted a single post within a 48 hour period was either when we were in Iowa last fall or some time in 2006. This cough, cold, insomnia and crippling fever have really thrown me for a loop, however I’m on the road to recovery just in time for the long weekend. I’ll be working tomorrow (and will have Monday off in lieu) as John and I are getting the heck out of the city for some much needed down time.

The following are some quick items of note today and if you’re staying in town this weekend, there are some events for you and the kiddies listed as well (some of which I’ve already featured but a refresher never hurts).

  • If you ordered Canucks PPV on Monday night and part way through the 3rd period you were left cursing and shouting at the blank TV screen when it cut out, you’ll be getting a full refund.
  • The lovely and talented Kuljeet Kaila included me in her recent article in Vancouver View Magazine, getting my thoughts (along with others’) about their spring cleaning rituals. The March issue is now available in stores like Chapters and London Drugs. I believe next month you’ll also be able to read a little something about/from Meg Fowler as well.
  • Vancouver View - March Issue

  • There is an Easter Long Weekend Children’s Festival at Bear Creek Park in Surrey. March 21-24, from 10:00am to 5:00pm daily.
  • It’s supersunday at the Vancouver Art Gallery this Sunday.
  • The Surrey Museum is hosting an Easter Fair, Saturday March 22nd from 1:00pm to 4:00pm [Google Map]
  • Also on Saturday, the BC Rockies take on the Canucks Alumni at Queen’s Park Arena. It’s a low dough event and the alumni will be sticking around for autograph signing etc. This will also raise funds for BC Deaf Hockey and their journey to the Canadian Championships.
  • If you have any events happening this weekend that you’d like to promote, drop me a line.

I just realized that since Easter is in March this year, we have a holiday-less April, boo. Hopefully we’ll have some Canucks playoff action to watch, which will equal overtime for John, which will directly lead to more self-created long weekend getaways for us. I can’t wait.

Update: Thanks to the reminder from Dave and Erin from the Contemporist Blog, the Interior Design Show is currently taking place at the Vancouver Convention Centre and will wrap up tomorrow.

    Not Just Punxsutawney’s Big Day

    February 2nd, 2007 by Miss604 | 1 Comment »

Whenever I think of this day, I get “I Got You Babe” stuck in my head thanks to the movie, Groundhog Day.

In traditional weather lore, if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and fails to see its shadow because the weather is cloudy, winter will soon end. If the groundhog sees its shadow because the weather is bright and clear, it will be frightened and run back into its hole, and the winter will continue for six more weeks. [wiki]

This year the prophetic little critter in Pennsylvania had this to say, which is a lot more than I can get out at that hour of the morning:

    wiartonwillie.JPGPhil’s official forecast as read 2/2/07 at 7:28 a.m. at Gobbler’s Knob:

El Nino has caused high winds, heavy snow, ice and freezing temperatures in the west.

Here in the East with much mild winter weather we have been blessed.

Global warming has caused a great debate.

This mild winter makes it seem just great.

On this Groundhog Day we think of one thing.

Will we have winter or will we have spring?

On Gobbler’s Knob I see no shadow today.

I predict that early spring is on the way [Groundhog.org]

Our Canadian version of Phil, is Wiarton Willie in Wiarton, Ontario. He also predicted an early spring. But just how many of these climatically inclined critters are out there? City News gives us a list including, but not limited to: Buckeye Chuck, French Creek Freddy and Balzac Billy. Way to go guys, today is YOUR day.

    turkey day no work

    October 9th, 2006 by Miss604 | No Comments »

I learned all about American history from watching Alvin and the Chipmunks [wiki]. Ya know the one where Theodore is studying for his exam and his brothers help him out by telling stories and re-enacting history?Yeah… Canadian Thanksgiving doesn’t involve pilgrims but it does involve turkey. Lots o’ turkey. This is John’s second Thanksgiving (Canadian style) so he decided to do a little write up about its history over on his site.

We’re still going to ‘celebrate’ American Thanksgiving at the end of November because really, any excuse for cooking a nice big meal and having some wine with my man is fine by me.Yesterday we had some adventures (as I wrote in my Metblogs post) then we went down to the Peace Arch [wiki]. It’s one of many Canadian/US Border crossings in the area but it’s right on the water. Since the park is officially a no-man’s land/owned by BOTH countries, John was able to walk over to the United States for the first time since he left it over a year ago now.

After that we headed for a family dinner and stuffed ourselves silly (especially with the blueberry pie that followed). Tonight we’re heading out to Surrey to be with my mom’s side of the family. With 5 kids under 6 years old and 12 adults, it should be an interesting night.

I’ve done a Metblogs post, one here, Laura covered the Amazing Race post, and the podcasts (RadioZoom & TheCrazyCanucks) are coming this week so I think this time spent checking in on my computer and online business has been well spent. Have a great holiday everyone, see you back at work tomorrow (boo!)
