    Weathering the Canada Line Storm

    March 3rd, 2008 by Miss604 | 2 Comments »

What is there to write about when you’re momentarily uninspired? You write about the weather (and in this town, transit and construction too).

Yaletown-Roundhouse Station on the Canada Line

Influenced by Keira’s lust for Jugo Juice as of late, I headed over to my nearby location to pick up a Berry Blast and a wrap for lunch. Along the way I cruised on by the gigantic pit known as the tail end of Davie Street, where it meets Pacific.

For several years now it’s been changing into what will become the Yaletown-Roundhouse Station along the Canada Line. Every day I hear calls from the pit, the whir of a crane, and what sounds like a metal door being opened and shut for hours. The dusty cement tickling my nose and mud on my shoes has become a staple of working in this area of town.

My walk across the bridge was bold as I ignored the “no pedestrians” sign and took my chances along the one-way street suspended above the massive hole in the ground.

The rain is pretty killer today, thinking back to Saturday when it was bright, sunny and 12 degrees, my exposed hands sent a shiver all the way up to my neck that was wrapped in a scarf made by my grandmother.

Folks on Twitter suggest a light sleet was cascading down on the city, meanwhile out in PoCo I heard it might even be snowing.

Back to the construction - this is something my husband deals with every day and it seems like his route to work changes as often as I do when we’re late to a dinner party. He’ll get to work in 20 minutes one day, and 90 the next due to bus routes, bus stops and roads that appear out of nowhere.

Big news yesterday was that boring for the second tunnel below the downtown core is now complete. I honestly don’t think that the line will assist me in everyday life, except perhaps with the flow of traffic downtown… and yeah, it will be nice once it’s all complete when we can ride the train out to the airport to meet my in-laws when the visit.

Honestly though, I do get excited when a construction project is completed. It means no more scaffolding with leaking fluid (that you’re not sure is water or not), no more route detours, shoes stuck in potholes or closed sidewalks - and maybe, just maybe a new Starbucks appears.

    Bits, Pieces and Recalls

    August 14th, 2007 by Miss604 | 6 Comments »

Last night I had a vicious migraine and passed out around 9am. I woke up this morning, got out of bed and my legs didn’t want to work. After thumping down onto the bedroom floor and telling my body it was time to wake up I made my way to the computer. I had my morning brew then read my compulsory blogs, finding some kick ass posts from Keira and Corinna. Following in the eclectic and fun style of both, here are a couple tid bits for today.

  • In 2005, John got me hooked on Rescue Me. Since then it’s been a staple for us and we countdown the days until we can download the torrents for the new season in the USA. A while back, Keira started calling John “Probie” and Duane “Garrity”. This of course makes me laugh out loud whenever I hear it and you would too, if you’ve seen the show. I was looking on the show’s site and decided to actually compare my hubby to “Probie” aka Mikey Silletti aka actor Mike Lombardi.

Okay well they could be cousins at least
  • Our good pal Duane is going on vacation soon, a well-deserved vacation where he can be in tropical weather, sit on the beach, be served froofy drinks with umbrellas in them. He told us the news last night over iChat, while also trying to sell us a used car.
  • Happy Duane!

  • I spent some quality time with my family this weekend, starting off with a lovely lunch then I watched Ella Enchanted with my niece and nephews while playing with sticker albums. These children are the most important part of our family yet it seems they’re actually in constant danger when playing with their shiney new birthday or Christmas gifts.

I heard about Thomas the Tank Engine recalls a while ago and alerted my sister, as there was found to be lead in the paint.

In June, for instance, another major toy company, the RC2 Corporation of Illinois, recalled 1.5 million popular Thomas & Friends wooden toy railway sets because for at least two years they were being coated with excessive levels of lead paint, even though the manufacturers were aware of restrictions on lead paint [NY Times]

Well this morning Mattel is all over the news, recalled 9 million products because of the same issue, lead paint, along with magnet problems [Mattel/Safety].

Toys affected by the lead paint are: Fisher Price CARS movie ‘Sarge’ character, Dora the Explorer and Elmo various plastic toys [Recall 1]

Those affected by the magnet recall include: Polly Pocket, Batman Magna Playsets, Barbie and Tanner, Doggie Daycare, Shonen Jump’s One Piece [Recall 2]

It runs in the family My mother would say that when she was little they would play with sharp, pointy, electro-shockey devices full of lead paint all the time. And yes, I remember a couple of my toys or games that, thinking back now, could have really put my eye out, but it’s more an issue of accountability on the toy manufacturers’ part. I’m just super glad that my niece’s preferred gift to receive is actually a book.

  • We’re off for a little adventure today, it will be our first “quality time” since the long weekend and we’re looking forward to it. John’s back at work tomorrow and then the PNE starts up, which means he’ll be uber busy for the next 2 weeks. I’m so unplugging for the rest of the day now.

What a weekend! John and I have been so busy but everything seems to involve down time in the sun so we’re not complaining one bit. With a few words and pictures I’ll now walk you through our weekend, starting with Thursday and ending as I’m cooking some salmon and asparagus as we ’speak’.

I’ve already blogged about the beach times on Thursday night but I’ll go back that far in case any Matthew Good fans are not aware, pre-sale tickets for his upcoming solo/acoustic tour shows across Canada went on sale that morning.

Friday at 10am the general sale opened up for concerts ranging from Victoria, BC to Thunder Bay, ON all happening throughout September. Check out the ‘Shows‘ page for more info and to purchase your tickets.

Up to the Minute Piper Status Friday night John worked late so we went out for a small bite to eat when he got home. On our return trip from the restaurant I came across a sign I’ve been seeing a lot of in the West End about a missing cat. Several weeks ago the first signs started appearing, taped to telephone poles announcing that a grey cat, Piper, had gone missing. A few weeks later there were new signs with new photos and a ‘we’re still looking for Piper’ message. In the last few days, the Piper posters have changed yet again to ‘we’re not giving up on Piper’. So folks, if you live downtown and have seen Piper, please give this person a call (/end PSA)

Yesterday we met up with a group of people, thanks to Duane’s facebook group call out, and attended Transformers. It was an enjoyable film, I wasn’t upset or annoyed, and left with a smile on my face. As Travis Smith pointed out there were some *serious* plot holes and flaws but all in all, I had a good time.

Following that, we headed out to Burnaby to catch some FIFA U-20 World Cup action. We took in the Scotland/Costa Rica game and within the span of 45 minutes saw a goal scored by bicycle kick, a fight, and a streaker.

Today we headed out to Surrey and boy do I ever miss having a back yard. Catch, frisbee, and sprinkler fun followed by eating a popcicle on the lawn. Good times & Happy Belated Birthday Cam!

Not entirely looking forward to heading back to work tomorrow but what can you do. Another week and another grind, followed by another well-deserved weekend.

Gallon Beers, Hair Foils and the Greeper

TC Lions After camping last weekend I kinda thought that we would be taking it easy this week but that’s definitely not the case. On Friday afternoon I went out for a drink with work people - well more like the boss packed us all up early and lead us over to the Irish Heather for beer to celebrate someone’s last day with the company. The night being young once those events wrapped up, my co-worker and I met up with John for more beer, which eventually lead us over to TC Lions Pub in Coal Harbour. Out on the patio for oooh about 4 hours we managed (barely) to polish off one of their 4 litre jugs of beer. It was a warm, clear evening so aside from being filled with pale ale we all managed to stumble home okay.

Saturday morning John went to work for CFOX again and I had the house to myself (this is a rare occasion for us Bollwitts, really). I decided to go get my hair done at our favourite little place on Denman.

new hair About a year ago John was looking for somewhere to get a cheap haircut and stumbled upon Envy. Since then we’ve become loyal, regular customers and really enjoy the relationship that we have with the owner and head stylist, Minoo. Although I certainly don’t go as often as I should, she’s so talented and gives the best haircuts - for men and women, no matter what you put in front of her. My hair was just getting WAY too long and shapeless, so she gave me some advice, a fantastic colour job and the awesome haircut followed. I’m SO happy with it I said I was going to blog about the place - so here it is. It’s hard to find a stylist that not only has reasonable prices and knows what to do with your hair, but the atmosphere of the studio is warm and lacks the attitudes of anywhere else in the downtown core.

Quick info about Envy Hair Studio & Esthetics: Located at 730 Denman [Google Map], open 7 days a week from 10:00am to 7:00pm and Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00pm. Call ahead and make an appointment (604-602-9880). They do hair (cut from $17, colour, highlights, extensions, updo’s etc.), Massages, Nail Care (e.g. manicures $20), and waxing (eyebrows $10, bikini $18 and Brazilians $35) and much much more. Their website isn’t up yet but it will be www.envyhairstudio.com.

Carlson Sock Monkey Last night we headed over to Corinna and Adam’s as it was her birthday last Thursday and the festivities were ongoing. Drinks were aplenty and it seemed like she was having a total blast, which was really great to see. By the way, if you’ve ever ‘adopted’ a sock monkey from them, be sure to join their “Sock Monkey Army” facebook group and post pics.

Our weekend has ended here, back at home after a train ride in from Surrey. Now I better not write about my dad being that it’s Father’s Day since my Mom is still a little miffed that here wasn’t a Mother’s Day dedication to her. Parents these days eh?

More busy-ness to come this week but hopefully we’re going to meet up with some folks from England (fans of the podcast) who are in town visiting. Which reminds me, I really need to keep up to speed on my posts since if it weren’t for blogging we wouldn’t have gone camping last weekend or had any plans last night.

    Victoria and her Day

    May 18th, 2007 by Miss604 | 2 Comments »

We’re doing absolutely nothing this long weekend. That’s right - nothing. Seems like everyone is up to something so that, combined with the rain now falling on the city means that I’m not feeling the happiest right now. Someone whose really not doing so great (which is more warranted than my whining for no reason) is Duane, who just had surgery [DuaneStorey.com]. John and I are gonna head over to his place this evening and we’re all going to have lots and lots of beer.

Also, I have to post this because a) I was SO shock-y all day at work today and 2) it makes me giggle. Have a great long weekend!

    24 Hours of Flickr

    May 5th, 2007 by Miss604 | No Comments »

Today is a day of much photo-taking, and Flickr is to blame.

What happens around the world in one day? In a word – life. Here on Flickr, photographers are sharing what they see: snapping daily moments, recording history, telling stories, capturing beauty.

To celebrate this global community, we invite you to join us in “24 Hours of Flickr” – a day-long global photo project. On May 5, 2007, grab your camera and whatever else you need, and chronicle your day in pictures. [Flickr Blog]

To participate in “24 Hours of Flickr” just post your photos today on your Flickr account. They must be taken May 5, 2007 and you can also upload to the Group. Pics submitted to the group may be chosen for use in the official 24 Hours of Flickr book.

    24 Hours of Flickr

I’ve been documenting our mundane adventures this morning, and will be sure to keep the photos going tonight when we have a few people come by for Cinco de Mayo (including the world famous Bourton T. Sheep). You can stay updated on my Flickr account as all of my participating photos will be in the 24 Hour of Flickr set.

Office Supplies I can’ Live Without

    April 18th, 2007 by Miss604 | 9 Comments »

I’ve never worked in such an officey-office before so when faced with a drawer full of shiney, colourful supplies, I tend to go a little nuts. Most recently I discovered a love for two particular items; Post-It Tabs and Correction Tape.

flags.jpgPost-It tabs/flags are amazing. Courtesy of our friends at 3M (okay I’m not really friendly with the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing company but I really have nothing against them)… these come in all shapes and sizes, and stick to anything, anywhere, anytime - again and again. And it’s not that annoying kind of sticky that leaves residue on your hands, it’s a nice clean stick. The little dispenser is practical, fun, and makes you want to grab flag after flag. To write on the tabs you need to use permanent marker (mmm fumes). They can be used to mark your place in a book, to divide pages in a binder or to stick on your fingertips to pretend you have long, multicoloured, square nails. Not that I’ve ever done that before, but if I did, they would STILL be sticky enough to tab a page.

correctiontape.jpgCorrection Tape is equally fascinating. No Wite-Out fumes, no wet pages, no smudges (if you’re left-handed like me), no crusty brushes and shaking of bottles; this is one helpful gadget. It’s particularly fun to fix should the tape become tangled, broken or loose. You can spend an hour in the afternoon carefully dissecting the cogs and inner workings of the correction tape dispenser should you have so much free time on your hands. It’s 5mm x 8 m of fun.

    Lunch with Miranda

    April 14th, 2007 by Miss604 | 4 Comments »

I have the place to myself today for the first time in… oh about 18 months. John’s working a gig today, which I’m sure he’ll blog about later so I won’t ruin it here. We both woke up at 5 am on a Saturday, I made him some toast and sent him on his way. Over the last year he’s been the one to wake up with me before work and prepare my meal or coffee, it’s the least I could do.

Saturday Afternoon I decided to take a little walk around the West End, unfortunately the Robson Market wasn’t open yet so I couldn’t browse around. Instead I got a coffee, enjoyed the fresh “it rained last night” smell and the warm morning sun. Then I did something I’ve been told every girl should do at least once; I bought myself flowers. I don’t know if it was the crisp spring air, the flip flops on my feet or the Grande dark roast in my hand but for a minute I felt a little odd. As though I should also have a snack dog in my purse, then I would be complete. That soon passed and I practically skipped home with my flowers in hand.

They’re pretty simple, I mean I’m not going to waste too much money on myself, what kind of girl do you think I am? But they’re a great addition to the dining room. All the laundry is downstairs dancing away and I can sit back, for about 45 minutes, enjoy my coffee, the sunshine, the flowers and actually feel pretty nice even after the devastating loss last night. I’m starting to think my husband should go to work every day.
