Thursday Morning Link Fest: Delicious Edition

    May 15th, 2008 by Miss604 | 4 Comments »

My husband and I have a special relationship, one in which he tags things for me in del.icio.us during the day, I check them out later and find great blogging material for a link fest *swoon*.

    - 13 of the best WordPress plugins - I’m currently using several on the list and I have to say, cforms is probably another one of my favourites. There are so many customization options, a slick interface, dozens of style options and you can hack the CSS on the forms to tailor them even further.

    - Tweeting for companies 101 - some tips and tricks for those using Twitter including shortcut prefixes like: @, d, on, off, follow, leave, help.

    - Difference between pitching mainstream press and bloggers - Chris Brogan touches on a topic we’ll be covering on our panel at Convergence 2008. After my experience with Matchstick (and those pitching me multiple times a day via my lovely contact form) I’m feeling pretty well-equipped for our panel, but Chris also offers some great insights.

Duane teaches us all about QR codes - I remember a guy at DemoCamp5 having a product that worked with QR codes (ScannerFly). I don’t know, they look funny but apparently they’re huge in Japan.

    - For the coolest collection of WordPress plugins, tricks, and news I recommend subscribing to Weblog Tools Collection.

Last but not least, we released episode #146 of the RadioZoom podcast last night. I played producer again, it was fun. Enjoy.

Wednesday Afternoon Link Fest: Warm Fuzzies Edition

    May 7th, 2008 by Miss604 | 5 Comments »

With fun and exciting things happening all around me it’s a wonder how I can get so down sometimes. There are people who struggle a lot more than I do in this life but everyone has their good days, their bad, and sometimes you just need to share some love and hope some of that comes right back at ‘ya. Even if it doesn’t, the warm fuzzy feelings accumulated from sending out the kindness should be enough to brighten your day, even if things simply aren’t going your way. Like Raul noted, “The darkest hour is just before the dawn.”

  • First off, Dan Lilly is awesome.
  • Second, it’s TrevorO’s birthday today. But he’s not getting old… he was old LAST year (har har).
  • I recently wrote a post about Cyberbullying and on that note, my good friend Keira-Anne has been the target of several online attacks lately so she shares some thoughts. Sure, she’s a big girl and can take care of herself but I know (trust me, I know) that it really sucks to wake up to a nasty comment or blog post written about you.
  • Concerned about privacy online although you still want to be able to use the internet to share photos with trusted friends and family? Check out Kinzin (makers of some great Facebook applications), Megan recently caught an episode of BlogTalkRadio where they give a shoutout to Kinzin and talk about their solutions.
  • In 2009 the Maritime Museum will be closing its doors and the St Roch will need to find a new home. I had many an interesting school field trip at the MM, it’s always sad to see something like that disappear.

  • Photo credit: John Biehler on Flickr

As a side note Google recently reevaluated their Page Rank system and many blogs received a boost in ratings. Mine on the other hand, stayed the same (however the site I built for my company got bumped up to PR6). This, combined with a waffling Technorati rating (which I think they calculate sometimes using a dartboard) are things that I rarely look at in terms of how successful my blog is, unless specifically asked by a potential sponsor.

One thing Duane told me is that if your links OUT to links IN ratio is off-kilter that can effect you meaning that my link fest posts could in fact be harming my rankings and ratings. I pondered several options to work around this then I realized, the reason folks must come to my site is for the content. If I didn’t continue to do what I love, spread the link love and be a part of a great social community on and offline, what’s the point. So essentially what I’m saying is despite the fact that geeky internet brownie points may be working against me, the link fests will never cease to be.

Monday Evening Link Fest: Geek Edition

    May 5th, 2008 by Miss604 | 4 Comments »

Welcome to a special “late” edition of my link fest, brought to you by a smooth glass of VQA following my guest speaking opportunity at SFU.

Thanks to the talented indie media master Lisa Mansfield of The Tyee, I spoke for her students about blogging, corporate communications and new media writing in the business world. I covered why companies should have blogs, the business of blogging, bloggers for hire, how to build an audience etc. I’ve only done a handful of speaker engagements but as I’m pretty confident in my ability to evangelize about blogging I figured I would be okay. Some people might not know my corporate history but I’ve been producing online content in the business world as a career for almost ten years, and corporate blogging is currently one of my number one tasks at my day job. I’m glad I can share my knowledge even though I get incredibly nervous and talk really fast as a result.

Now, on to the super geeky link fest:

  • John Biehler highlights some cool new iPhone apps.
  • Scoble gets the scoop about where YouTube will go next, which is apparently into the live streaming market (with their eye on mobile video).
  • The Weblog Tools Collection researches the best and worst times to blog.
  • Drupal Camp Vancouver kicks off this Thursday evening but sorry folks, it’s totally and entirely sold out. Look for coverage around the internets (and around here) on Friday and Saturday.
  • Local design firm smashLab gets included in Time Magazine’s annual Design 100 and was singled out in the magazine’s annual roster of people and ideas behind today’s most influential design. Their DesignCanChange site encouraged over 1,500 designers who pledged to embrace more sustainable professional practices. [smashLab]
  • Vancouver’s Net Tuesday, NetSquared will be taking place tomorrow at Workspace. “Social change makers and web innovators come together at NetTuesdays to mix, swap stories, and collaborate on new ideas.” The theme tomorrow is widgets [Meetup.com]. If you can’t make it, Raul will be taking notes and possibly live blogging over here during the event.
  • Free AT&T wifi for iPhones in the USA? I’ll have to try it out tomorrow as I’ll be heading down to Bellingham after work to take care of some business at Victoria’s Secret. I assure you it’s a lot less exciting than it sounds. I’ll make sure to swing by a Starbucks or Barnes and Noble to see what happens, although being on Rogers, who knows.
  • And for something completely different - have you seen this giant (inflatable) gorilla?

Friday Fun Fest with Linkage Galore

    April 18th, 2008 by Miss604 | 6 Comments »

Yes, this is still totally a Link Fest I just felt like having some fun, in the sun, on a Friday afternoon because what could be better? Oh yes, it’s not quite the weekend but it’s so close I can taste the margaritas.

  • I was invited to Vancouver’s first ever Twitter meetup which took place last night. Many showed up at UVA Wine Bar on Seymour and Smithe, so many in fact that we decided to move the event (after an hour) over to the Granville Room. I saw some familiar faces, some new, and spent time with @lisamedia, @colleencoplick, @todmaffin, @hummingbird604, @jennmae, @RochelleGrayson @kdmurray, @nalei, @counti8 @sillygwailo. Unfortunately neither venue had wifi so I couldn’t Twitter a thing butI have a few pics up here.
  • Who walks down the street randomly carrying a box of detergent and decides to discard it in a fountain? I know the other scenario is that this was planned mischief but… really

Photo credit: John Bollwitt on Flickr
  • A while back John and I had a meeting in New Westminster and I was looking for a coffee shop close to the Skytrain that had wifi. Unfortunately we didn’t find one, and the closest thing to it was a Blenz up on 6th and 6th, but this morning Marina passed on this news tidbit: “New Westminster has been working with consultants on Wi-Fi and is currently putting together a business plan. With the research completed, the city’s electrical utility commission will review it before going to council later this year.” - New West News Leader
  • Wondering how I did at the Army and Navy Shoe Sale? Check my preview post for an update and photos of the madness… and success!
  • Starting today and running until Sunday the EPIC sustainable living expo will be taking place at the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre. My goal? Meet Mike Holmes. My more realistic goal? To see some Vancouverites out and about, learning about sustainable living, as well as meeting up with the rest of the EPIC/happy frog social media team.
  • Also, since Earth Day is coming up (hence my Green Web posts lately), tomorrow the 7-week FREE Environmental Extravaganza begins in Surrey. Check the site for a list of events and activities.
  • Finally a shout out to Tequila Kitchen that will be entertaining and supplying nourishment to kick off my weekend. I’ll be live blogging from EPIC tomorrow with the happy frog crew so be sure to check for more green content over the weekend and if you come on down to the show be sure to swing by the happy frog booth and say hi!

WTS - What the Surrey #26: Link Fest Hodge Podge

    April 9th, 2008 by Miss604 | 3 Comments »

The WTS and a link fest? Combining two of my patented blog features? Yes, daring I know.

  • Surrey decided to one-up Vancouver’s smoking restrictions near entrance ways with their own 7.5 meter rule. [Surrey Leader]
  • White Rock (South Surrey Junior) will build their $500,000 Spirit Square right along the main strip, between the museum and the pier [Surrey Now]

  • Photo credit: John Bollwitt on Flickr
  • “The number of street homeless in Surrey climbed by 15 per cent in the last three years.” [Surrey Leader] But isn’t it great that they’re bringing Yaletown to Whalley?
  • The Vaisakhi Parade will be taking place this Saturday April 12th from 10:00am to 3:00pm. “The Vaisakhi Celebration in Surrey celebrates more than just the birth of the Sikh identity. Gathering crowds of more than thousands, the Vaisakhi Parade symbolizes diversity and multiculturalism.” Expect traffic detours and road closures from 124st to King George and 72nd to 88th. [City of Surrey]

  • Photo credit: Stephen Rees on Flickr
  • You know there’s something wrong when your city has almost a half a million people and yet you can’t get a bus from point A to point B after 6 o’clock at night (regardless of said city’s area). “Surrey is “severely underserviced” by public transit and desperately needs more buses to provide an alternative to driving on congested roads, according to NDP MLA Jagrup Brar. Surrey has 83 buses to serve a population of 400,000. When Vancouver had 400,000 people there were 400 buses, the representative for Surrey-Panorama Ridge said.” [Metro Vancouver via Stephen Rees]
  • To wrap up on a brighter note, despite the need for more buses at least those doing the daily grind aren’t discouraged. “Of workers commuting to Surrey, 12.2 per cent (up from 9.5 per cent) used a sustainable transit mode.” [Surrey Leader]

Thursday Link Fest: Epic, Cupcakes, Law, DemoCamp, REM!

    April 3rd, 2008 by Miss604 | 9 Comments »

I have so many mini topics to cover that if I were to write a blog post for each people would get annoyed about how I’m too prolific and my feed would swamp their readers and it would just be a mess. On that note, if you’d like to simply get my feed (without Flickr photos too) you can grab it here, or stay with the main feed, cause it’s pretty fun.

  • The EPIC Sustainable Living Expo is “Vancouver’s largest green consumer show and eco-marketplace”. It will be taking place April 18-20th at the Vancouver Convention Centre (Canada Place) and will feature a personal hero of mine, Mike Holmes, whom I hope will one day agree to oversee the construction of Casa de Bollwitt (a gal can dream). Mike will be hitting the main stage on Saturday the 19th so be sure not to miss his green construction and reno advice along with the oodles of other workshops and demos that will be featured at the show.
  • In West End news, if you haven’t been to the Cupcake store lately you may not know that due to its popularity a slough of other sweet-related shops have opened up around it along Denman between Comox and Davie ie. that new chocolate shop and the revival of Cookies by George. Well with the closing of Primo Gelato on the corner of the alley right before Davie (just after Pendrell), it turns out the Cupcake shop has relocated to this prime piece of real estate leaving Cookies by George in their dust.
  • On another sweet note, the viral marketing company out of Toronto, Matchstick, has another promotion. They’re the company that supplied John and I with such items as our Nokia 6682 cell phones and the Samsung T10. This time around it’s all about premium chocolate, so if you’re a female blogger in Vancouver and you have a sweet tooth, simply fill out their survey, they’ll then contact you and mail you the Dove “Pleasure Kit”, oh my!
  • Tonight Michael Geist will be speaking about e-publishing and the law at UBC although I will be unable to attend. Not to worry though, I have enlisted Raul as my Miss604.com correspondent for the evening. He’ll be live blogging and writing a post about his experience at the talk and cross posting over here. Big thanks in advance to Raul for his efforts.
  • What I am also missing tonight, mostly due to geography, is the first ever DemoCamp Victoria. I’ve liveblogged most of Vancouver’s DemoCamps, and even caught Mastermaq’s live Twitters of DemoCamp Edmonton so it will be great to see how things go over on the Island. I have a feeling we may be able to find a recap of DemoCamp Victoria over on Tris’ blog.
  • I happened to catch on the radio yesterday that REM is coming to town, and Modest Mouse is opening up for them, AND they’ll be playing Deer Lake Park. The only thing that could make this any better were to be if the cupcake store had a booth setup at the concert.

  • Modest Mouse - Missed the Boat

  • As it turns out, my husband is feeling under the weather and since he was so good to me when I was ill in March, I will be staying home tonight to make him tea, cook him some dinner, and check “buy” on the Canucks pay per view. If you ordered the game on March 17th when Shaw had the outage in the 3rd period, you will be getting a refund. I got my bill last night (which should have included that day) but apparently they’re applying the credit on the billing cycle that starts March 24th.
  • Finally, I went to get my passport yesterday morning. I met my mother at 7:00am and we headed over to Sinclair Centre. We took the elevator up to the second floor, got a ticket from reception, and about 20 minutes later both of our applications were in. If you need to apply for your passport or renew, I would highly suggest that now is the time to do it.
  • That’s it for now, happy (sunny) Thursday everyone!

Friday Morning Link Fest: Snow in March Edition

    March 28th, 2008 by Miss604 | 5 Comments »

A dozen blog posts in a week including a handful of my link fests is not too shabby considering I could simply blog about the crazy weather in Vancouver - cause people always like to talk about the weather.

    March Snow

  • Lauren is the big winner of the concert tickets to see The Submarines with Bellx1 tomorrow at the Plaza Club.
  • Roberto Luongo and his lovely wife have welcomed their baby girl Gabriella into this world [The Province]. Lou will be suiting up for tonight’s game as well.
  • The Pride Parade, that attracts almost half a million spectators every August might be changing its route for this summer [News1130]. If you haven’t yet taken part in this or any of the after party events, I highly recommend it. Sunshine, music, dancing, and lots of swag is given away to the crowd.

  • I admit, this photo is mostly for Raul ;-)
  • Tonight I’m heading to the Young Women in Business “Beyond Pink” conference. I’ll just be at the tradeshow which is just a slice of the actual event but I’m looking forward to booth hopping, especially since I recently noticed a rep from Apple Canada will be there.
  • I think it’s pretty darn cool that I’ve been named one of 96 Women Bloggers to Watch in Spring 2008 by the Virtual Women’s Day Celebrations blog.
  • Nada Surf plays the Commodore Ballroom tomorrow night.
  • Finally, tomorrow is Vancouver’s Bridging Media event - bringing together traditional broadcast and production professionals with those in digital media… and much more. Miss604.com is pleased to be a Media Sponsor, providing the some live blogging goodness so check back throughout the day tomorrow for the coverage.

Tuesday Morning Link Fest: Power Woman Edition

    March 25th, 2008 by Miss604 | No Comments »

I woke up this morning thinking this would be a pretty breezy week until I took a look at my calendar, and at the media passes for conferences this weekend and realize it’s back to business as usual for Miss604. Admittedly, my posts lately have been my staple Link Fest mixed with absent days but I’m back now, and I’m healthy - at least until this next round of craziness washes over.

  • Tonight I’ll hit Workspace for the first time since DemoCamp05 to take part in the Evening of Green 2.0. The evening will feature our Brother Printer and Wall Street Journal sugar daddy Darren Barefoot (talking about DeSmogBlog), Ron Williams who founded happyfrog (note the badge on my sidebar), and Rex Turgano founder of TheGreenPages. This is a part of the NetTuesday event series.
  • This weekend is the Young Women in Business “Beyond Pink” conference. Thanks to some diligent organizers, I’ll be sporting my media access around the tradeshow floor and mingling with other enterprising young women from around BC, some of which I’ll see again at the following morning’s event.
  • Saturday we have the Bridging Media one day conference. I’ll be the official live blogger of this inaugural gathering created by Megan Cole and Erica Hargreave (and organized with the assistance of Cinci, Monique, Carol and Monica). The objective is to, “open the channels of communication between the broadcast and digital media communities. We aim to increase an understanding of our respective industries and strengthen our approach to building multi-platform projects.”
  • Next Tuesday is also the Massive Technology Show. Between my panel/speaker access and a media pass, I’ll be making my way around the conference and tradeshow floor, more than likely on the lookout for those famous Peer1 martinis.
  • red see

In non tech, digital media, or womanly conference matters -

  • Thanks for Jordan of Langley Politics, I’ve been informed of the Fort Langley Candlelight Tour happening on Saturday March 29th from 5:00pm to 9:00pm at Fort Langley.
  • Thursday April 3rd will see Victoria’s first ever DemoCamp (more info on the wiki).
  • We returned home yesterday on a 3 hour ferry ride that took us from Salt Spring to Pender Island, Mayne Island, Galiano and back home by way of Tsawwassen. I think we’re ready for the busy week ahead which luckily starts off pretty slow and gets split up by a concert on Saturday, you know, to keep us a little grounded.
