If you are not reading this via official Miss604 channels, this content is being reproduced without permission.
Today the BC Sports Hall of Fame inducts a new roster of talented individuals and teams who have made our province proud through excellence in the realm of athletics. The Banquet of Champions will take place at the Vancouver Convention Centre and will honor the following:

Athlete Category

Gary Gait, Lacrosse
Widely considered the greatest lacrosse player of all time, Victoria’s Gary Gait revolutionized the way the modern game is played. A winner of every possible major lacrosse team championship, Gait won the NLL MVP award a record six times and remains the NLL’s all-time leader in goals and points.
Paul Gait, Lacrosse
Like his twin brother, Victoria’s Paul Gait also enters the discussion of greatest lacrosse player of all-time. Over his career Gait won twelve major championships, led the NLL in goal scoring four times, earned eight First-Team All Pro selections, and won the league’s MVP award in 2002.
Trevor Linden, Hockey
Perhaps the most universally respected athlete in Vancouver sports history, Trevor Linden recorded six 30-goal seasons and led the Canucks to within a goalpost of winning the 1994 Stanley Cup. After his 2008 retirement, Linden became only the second player to have his number retired by the club.
Maëlle Ricker, Snowboarding
West Vancouver’s Maëlle Ricker took on the world’s best in her own backyard in 2010 and emerged Olympic champion in women’s snowboard cross, the first Canadian woman to win gold on home snow. A month later Ricker locked up the World Cup Overall title. In 106 career starts she collected 14 victories and 32 podium finishes
Lauren Woolstencroft, Para Alpine Skiing
The ‘Golden Girl’ of the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games, North Vancouver’s Lauren Woolstencroft became the first Winter Paralympian in history to win five gold medals at a single Paralympic Games. Earlier she represented Canada at the 2002 and 2006 Paralympics winning another three gold medals, one silver, and one bronze.

Media Category

Tom Larscheid
The excitable, straight-shooting Canucks radio colour commentator for most of the past 33 years, Tom Larscheid’s energized enthusiasm resonated through the airwaves working beside the legendary Jim Robson and later Jim Hughson and John Shorthouse. Larscheid also worked as the BC Lions’ colour commentator on CKNW from 1975 until 2000.

Builder Category

Mike Jones, Wrestling
For over thirty years, Mike Jones’ Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club has been a dynasty churning out eighteen Olympians, twenty-eight national championship teams, thirteen world and Olympic medals, eight NAIA team titles, and produced more individual champions than any other comparable program in North America.
Audrey Williams, Figure Skating
Involved for over fifty years, Vancouver’s Audrey Williams is one of the all-time great figure skating officials from BC. Appointed an International Judge by the ISU in 1967, she judged the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, six World Championships, and four World Junior Championships. Williams remains the only female native British Columbian to serve as an Olympic judge.

W.A.C. Bennett Award

Marty Zlotnik
His remarkable drive, vision, and organizational ability have significantly shaped BC sport for decades. Through the Thunderbird Golf Society, the UBC Thunderbird Council, and the Millenium Scholarship Breakfast Zlotnik has raised millions of dollars for BC athletes. Zlotnik has served as president of the Kids Up Front Foundation, chair of the BC Sports Hall of Fame, and Vancouver Parks Board Commissioner.

Team Category

Members of the 2010 Canadian Olympic Men’s Hockey Team

“In an era when the Chinese population in BC was made to feel like second-class citizens, the Chinese Students Soccer Team stood as a pillar of strength and a beacon of hope, the only Chinese-Canadian soccer team in Canada and thought to be the only such team outside of China.” Read more in this Vancouver Sun article.

The BC Sports Hall of Fame, which was located in BC Place, will soon be moving back into its space at the newly renovated stadium. Many of the inductees have also donated items to the Hall of Fame’s new Olympic Celebration Gallery.
Update 7:00pm: Members of the BC Sports Hall of Fame, along with tonight’s inductees, were just piped into the room as we all stood and applauded the honourees.

Update 7:15pm: Colin Brown, Hall of Fame & Museum Chair welcomed everyone to the banquet this evening. Sue Griffin, President & CEO of the BC Sports Hall of Fame just talked about their year “on the road” since they haven’t had a home since BC Place has been under construction. They brought their collection to communities across the province, from Trail to Prince George. They’re looking forward to the new Hall of Fame facility that will open in November, 2011.

It’s 6,000 square feet and will host the largest Vancouver 2010 collection in the world thanks to many donations from athletes. Everyone in the room (about 1,000 attendees here tonight) just received a ticket to the grand opening.

Update 8:30pm: Bob Lenarduzzi and Ian Paton (of Paton Auctions) have taken to the stage following dessert to conduct a live auction. The first item up for bids is a winter storm getaway at the Wickaninnish Inn in Tofino. It sold for $2,300 and the next item is a stay at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia and it sold for $650.

The next item is “Golf with Trevor and Tom” and the value is listed as “priceless”. It’s a day of golf with inductees Trevor Linden and Tom Larscheid at Capilano Golf Club followed by drinks and dinner. The item just sold for $2,400. Following the golf package is a full page ad in the Vancouver Sun, valued at $25,000. Bob interrupted Ian at certain price levels to announce that the Sun would offer an additional ad should the bidding get up to a certain amount. The result is that three individuals had winning bids of $12,000 on three separate ads. That auction just generated $36,000.

Photo credit: John Bollwitt on Flickr

All proceeds help the BC Sports Hall of Fame which is a non-profit organization that celebrates sport in BC.

Update 9:15pm: Tonight’s first inductee is Maëlle Ricker. Steve Darling and Jill Krop sit down to interview her on stage. Steve asks what she’s thinking right now. “I’m nervous,” Maëlle replied. There was an early photo of her on one of the big screens where she’s on skis so she was asked about how she got into snowboarding. The hosts then moved on to talk about her Olympic performance.

Photo credit: John Bollwitt on Flickr

“I was trying I got all the lyrics right so none of my friends would bug me,” said Maëlle about the national anthem playing during her medal ceremony.

Jill also asked about how she’s a role model for young women. “I heard Karen Magnussen say earlier tonight that you want to be gracious when you win and you want to be gracious when you don’t. That’s something you want to pass on.”

Maëlle will be donating her freestyle snowboard from the Torino Games to the BC Sports Hall of Fame.

Update 9:20pm: The next inductees are BC members of the 2010 Olympic gold medal hockey team including Roberto Luongo, Scott Neidermayer, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, and Shea Weber. Scott Neidermayer and Roberto Luongo are in attendance tonight. Steve Darling asks the two men about the gold-winning game and in particular the overtime period.

Photo credit: John Bollwitt on Flickr

“Obviously it was exciting and it was nerve racking. But, at the end of the day it’s all for moments like that,” said Roberto. “The guys did a great job of keeping their focus and that stayed with them into overtime,” added Scott. “I think what we tried to do was get settled down. It was pretty disappointing to get scored on when we were that close to a gold medal… …I didn’t know when it would end, I was just working toward getting it to end in our favour.”

Jill asked Roberto how he feels about being inducted with the team. “I wasn’t born in BC but having the chance to play in Vancouver, and play in the Olympics, it’s something I will cherish.” He added that he’ll make a point of visiting the BC Sports Hall of Fame as often as he can.

Photo credit: John Bollwitt on Flickr

Roberto Luongo will be donating his goalie mask from the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games to the BC Sports Hall of Fame.

Update 9:35pm: Gary Gait’s introduction video said he’s the greatest lacrosse player of all time, “although his brother might have something to say about that.” His twin brother Paul is also being inducted tonight. “I just keep playing and enjoying the game and good things just keep happening,” said Gary. “Any time you play on a team sport it’s like a fraternity, you’re lifelong friends.”

Photo credit: John Bollwitt on Flickr

“Just like anything in life, you put the work behind it and success will come,” added Gary. “That’s what I try to teach my kids and that’s what it’s all about for me.”

Update 9:45pm: Marty Zlotnik will be receiving the W.A.C. Bennett award next. This award is not handed out annually and this is only the 14th time it has been handed out.

Photo credit: John Bollwitt on Flickr

Update 9:55pm: Lauren Woolstencroft, our golden girl (with 5 gold medals in a single Paralympic Games) is the next inductee. An astonishing athlete who has been decorated with countless medals for her achievements worldwide, she takes the stage with Jill and Steve. “It’s a huge honor and it’s an amazing class to be a part of,” said Lauren.

Photo credit: John Bollwitt on Flickr

Regarding Vancouver 2010, Lauren said it was an awesome experience. “We had so much media coverage which was great for the Paralympic Games.”

Photo credit: John Bollwitt on Flickr

Update 10:00pm: Mike Jones is the next inductee (he coached our wrestling gold medal winners Daniel Igali and Carol Huynh, among others) and has a proud SFU following in the house tonight.

Update 10:08pm: The next inductee tonight is Paul Gait, the other half of the dominating Gait brothers of lacrosse fame. He grew up a fan of rugby but lacrosse was where he found a home. Steve asked about playing alongside his brother. “It’s been said that he’s a little bit more pizazz, a little bit more flare and I have a little more power. But in my eyes it’s just the opposite.” He added, “We were competitive every day of our lives and having that extra challenge on an hourly basis or so just drives you.”

Paul said getting inducted is a great honour. “It’s an even better honour knowing that it’s a sports hall of fame and not just a lacrosse hall of fame.”

Update 10:15pm: The Hall inducts the 1933 Chinese Students Soccer Team. Members of their families are present to accept honors on the players’ behalf. They gathered on the stage for a photo below the big screen that was displaying an old black and white image of the championship team. “They were all born here,” said Mr Yip (apologies I didn’t catch his first name) who is the son of a team member. “They were Canadians, although they weren’t treated as Canadians.”

“If you look at the image behind us, five of them are Yips, which is why there’s so many of us on the stage today.” Words of inspiration for Chinese Canadian athletes of tomorrow who see this team in the BC Sports Hall of Fame: “Future generations will come to the realization that it is possible if you work hard and train hard, that it is possible to win a championship and excel at your sport.”

Steve Darling was just told by Mr Yip’s widow that she was wearing her original wedding dress on stage tonight. I think my heart just melted.

Update 10:25pm: Audrey Williams is inducted next in the “builder” category as she helped grow figure skating programs in BC. She spoke about the evolution of figure skating, judging, and the sport today. She added that Patrick Chan’s recent performance at the world championships was the best she’s ever seen.

Update 10:32: In the “media” category is our second to last inductee of the night, Tom Larscheid. “I won’t apologize, I wanted our teams to win every game,” said Tommy. “I never had any training. I didn’t go to journalism school or broadcasting school but the thing I learned very quickly in this business is ‘be yourself’. That’s what I’ve tried to do all these years. Show your personality. I love connecting with the listener or the viewer.”

Photo credit: John Bollwitt on Flickr

“In our business we take ourselves too seriously. We should always remember it’s a game. It’s an obligation to tell the story as we see it through our eyes.”

Photo credit: John Bollwitt on Flickr

Update 10:45pm: The final inductee tonight is Trevor Linden who gets a standing ovation. “I’m inspired and I love hearing their stories,” said Trevor about all the other members of this year’s inductee class as he sat on stage.

Photo credit: John Bollwitt on Flickr

Trevor said that in his early years with the team Burke and Quinn told the players: “We expect a lot of you on the ice but we expect a lot of you off the ice.” Those words stuck with him and inspired his volunteerism and activity in the community.

His brother also told him: “You can make a difference to a child just by showing up and not many people can do that… …You have to use that gift as much as you can.”

Photo credit: John Bollwitt on Flickr

“I was rooting so hard for the guys to get the job done,” he added about this year’s playoff run for the Canucks. “I think game 6 at the coliseum was one of the greatest games played in history,” he said about his own run in 1994.

“I think every athlete can say that the support from their family and their friends is what gets them to where they are.” In terms of coaches, Trevor gives a shout out to Pat Quinn. “Not only did he draft me, he drafted me out of high school.”

“I think that certainly I wasn’t the most talented player around. I think I applied myself and worked really hard. You have to figure out what you have to do to be successful… …There’s one way to have success and that’s to work extremely hard.”

Update 10:55pm: That’s all for the live blog tonight. All photos in this post were taken by John Bollwitt and you can see the rest in his Flickr set.

© 2004-2011 Rebecca Bollwitt - Miss604.com. If you are not reading this via official Miss604 channels, this content is being reproduced without permission.
The 29th annual Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards, celebrating the very best in Vancouver theatre, are taking place tonight at the Commodore Ballroom. As I did last year, I am sponsoring a live blog of the awards ceremony in order to show support and promote our city’s lively community.

The ceremony will begin around 6:45pm and I will be updating each category as the winners are announced. Each update will be time-stamped and I will try to get in a few quotes from award recipients.

Update 6:15pm The tag for tonight appears to be #Jessies on Twitter. You can follow along to see what guests are talking about online. The Commodore is filling up quickly as guests arrive and take their seats at the banquet tables on the ballroom floor. I have taken to my seat and have just arranged all award categories in the order that they will be handed out.

Update 6:35pm I just ordered red wine at the Commodore and it came in a can. We’ll see how this plays out. On another note, GayVancouver.net is here snapping photos around the audience. Follow along @GayVancouver on Twitter.

Update 6:50pm The award are getting underway with a little music from U2 (Where the Streets Have No Name)… I’m expecting the Canucks to hop out on stage and start doing laps. The song has almost become and anthem for Vancouver. Productions nominated for awards tonight are now being showcased on the large screens that flank the stage on both the left and right side of the venue.

Update 7:00 Camilla Tibbs, President of the Jessie Richardson Theatre Society, welcomes everyone to tonight’s event. She starts by saying that although you’d think theatre production would be down in recent years, there were 32% more shows up for consideration this year over the 2008-2009 season. “This speaks to our resilience as a community and our determination to make theatre happen no matter the circumstances.”

The first awards are handed out by Andy Toth and Jay Brazeau who both play Edna in The Arts Club’s Hairspray this season. Toth, Brazeau’s understudy, took over after Brazeau took ill during one of the first performances although he has returned to the show since.

Outstanding Production, Large Theatre
Recipient: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Arts Club Theatre Company (co-production with the Belfry Theatre) “This really says something about co-productions,” says Bill Millerd. “We have to work together with all the cutbacks and budget restrictions… …This is acknowledging how great theatre is in British Columbia.”

Update When all is said and done, and the tables are parted to make room for the dance floor, one thing is clear. Vancouver’s theatre community (which I thought was strong last year) is only getting stronger. They promote their history, their patrons, playwrights, directors, and up-and-coming talent. Everyone’s ‘been there’ and everyone has a goal to reach. Goodnight from the Commodore. Here’s to another great year of shows in Vancouver!

I am proud once again to be the Social Media Sponsor of the awards and with that comes a live blog of the ceremonies tonight (as I did last year).

The silent auction and reception will begin at 5:30pm followed by dinner and the awards starting at 6:30pm. I should be settled in at our table by 6:00pm and John will be supplying photos throughout the evening. You will be able to spot my updates throughout the night as they will be tagged Update. I will include information about the nominees and gather quotes when winners are announced. There are 10 categories plus the “Connecting the Community” award that was voted on by the public.

Update 7:50pm Emcee Sophie Lui takes the stage to welcome everyone and present the nominees. Her “accessories” this evening consist of two Canucks branded foam fingers. Go Canucks Go!. Seated at my table is nominee Andrea Scott who is the co-owner of skoah inc.

Update 8:00pm: Finishing up our meals, Sophie takes to the stage (before being able to enjoy her baby lava cake… which was delicious by the way). She gives a shout out to the sponsors and hands the mic over to YWCA Metro Vancouver CEO, Janet Austin. Janet talks about the important role of the YWCA in our region. “Let us live in a world where the women in the Downtown Eastside can live past the age of 40, which is currently a reality.”

If you are not reading this via official Miss604 channels, this content is being reproduced without permission.
Today is We Day in Vancouver as thousands of school-aged children congregate in Rogers Arena to hear some of the most inspirational and motivational speakers of our time. Last year I had the chance to live blog throughout the day, meeting Jane Goodall, Mia Farrow, and listening to the sage advice of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Today I’ll be doing the same, posting updates here over the next few hours as Al Gore, Martin Sheen, Reverend Jesse L. Jackson Sr. and Free The Children co-founders and international children’s rights activists Craig and Marc Kielburger take to the stage in front of 18,000. Rick Hansen, Ethan Zohn, and Philippe Cousteau, will also speak as Hedley, Barenaked Ladies, and Colbie Caillat entertain.

We Day brings together children and youth to teach and inform them that even the very smallest actions can cause a big change in the world today. Last year the movement was about pledging 10 actions and spreading the word to 10 of your friends, with Give Your 10.

Today’s call to action is to drive 1 million “Likes” to Facebook for We Day. For every “Like” the page gets, sponsors will donate $1 to Free the Children, which will ultimately providing incredible support to children struggling against poverty and exploitation around the world.

Update Stay tuned for live updates and photos from 10:00am PT until 2:00pm PT

After a welcome from First Nations Chief Shawn Atleo, We Day 2010 in Vancouver got underway. Thousands dance, scream, and shout when words like “be the change” or “it’s not charity, it’s sustainability” are spoken. Just as it moved me last year, it’s incredible witness the positive energy in this arena today.

Update The first speaker is actor and activist, Martin Sheen who quotes Robert F Kennedy: “Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope… and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”

Update I will be going between live blogging in the press room to watching the speakers in the arena so for more frequent updates follow me on Twitter @Miss604 or search the tag #WeDay.

You can also watch We Day live online or catch the replay on CTV later tonight.

Update Ethan Zohn (from Survivor) and motivational speaker Spencer West now head up a panel discussion on the We Day mainstage.

Update Jim Berk of Participant Media highlights the importance of teachers and the school system in our country and in America. He introduces a trailer for his upcoming film, Waiting for Superman

Berk gets all of the teachers in the arena to stand up as he says, “everyone is capable of great things and they all start with great teachers.”

Update Rick Hansen is introduced as the Greatest Living Canadian Hero as he shares stories about perseverance. “You will meet challenges and make errors but you have to just keep going.”

Update Heading back into the press room, the first Q&A session is with Reverend Jesse L. Jackson Sr. “Often people say at rallies like this that the youth are our future. The reality is that the youth are right now.” He uses a sports analogy, as these events are something our nations have in commons. “The rules are public, the goals are clear, the referee is fair — those conditions we must apply beyond the playing field, to schools and education.”

A question is asked by a reported from YouthInk Magazine about the evolution of civil rights and activism over the last 50 years. Rev Jackson replied, “Against great odds we have made great progress, we’re a different nation today.” He references that we live in a such a different time now, without segregation, with women’s rights, with children and human rights. “We are different world with different challenges including different weapons — and that includes the right to vote.”

On the topic of celebrities championing causes Rev Jackson says that he learned more from some of his childhood heroes than he did from his textbooks. People like Jackie Robinson, Harry Belafonte, Sidney Poitier and of course Dr King who not only did their ‘jobs’ but also toured around speaking to the public and informing them of issues.

Update Free the Children and We Day founders Marc and Craig Kielburger are on their way up next. They’re beaming (as they should be) about the enthusiasm from all of the Student Leaders here today. They said they just met former Vice President Al Gore who they last saw years ago when he invited him to the White House in an effort to get his own children involved in social causes. “There’s still this view in school that children need to wait until they’re older,” says Craig. He adds that it wasn’t hip to be socially active when he was growing up, “changing the world was the antithesis of cool.” Now, they have celebrities, politicians, and rockers alongside youth who are all championing causes.

“For every international action we also have a domestic action,” says Marc to highlight that Free The Children believes in global and local support.

Update Martin Sheen is on his way to the press room and then I’ll be heading out to catch the rest of the production in the arena for the next hour or so.

Update 18,000 kids cheering for Al Gore. 18,000 kids chanting Freedom! 18,000 kids all motivated to do some good in their communities. After a sing-along version of “If I had a Million Dollars” from the Barenaked Ladies, We Day 2010 came to a close.

The call to action from the Kielburger brothers included some of the following local and global events. These are all campaigns that can be run by schools, classrooms, or individuals.

Halloween for Hunger – Students are encouraged to collect non-perishable food donations for their local Food Banks on while Trick or Treating.

Vow of Silence – Students are encouraged not to speak, email, Facebook, text or Tweet on November 19th.

You can watch We Day on CTV October 30th at 7pm to catch all of the musical entertainment and talks from Al Gore, Martin Sheen, and more.

© 2004-2011 Rebecca Bollwitt - Miss604.com. If you are not reading this via official Miss604 channels, this content is being reproduced without permission.
I am live at the Commodore Ballroom this evening for the 28th annual Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards. Tonight the very best of Vancouver theatre will be honored for their achievements over the past year. From Best Actor to Set Design in both big and small production, all will be recognized at tonight’s ceremony.

I’m going to get myself situated in my private box seat, grab a glass of water, snap some photos and begin coverage around 6:45pm.

Update I just had the chance to meet Ryan Beil, who is nominated for four Jessies tonight (and you might recognize him from the A&W commercials).

If you’re following along on Twitter you can search for the tag #YWVanWODA throughout the evening.

The liveblog will begin around 6:30pm but we’ll have some content up before then. It’s bound to be great evening here at the Westin Bayshore and in the meantime you can read my previous posts about the awards for some background.

All of tonight’s nominees can be found listed here.

Update The nominees have started to arrive and they are being given gorgeous corsages. Outside the grand ballroom at the Westin there are over 50 silent auction items up for grabs. In my brief walk-through I found some awesome hockey artwork, jewelry from Tiffany’s, kayaking experiences, and gift certificates for The Boathouse, Crave, and Five Sails.

Update The nominees have just been introduced and dinner is about to begin. I just found out that there is a nominee at my Miss604.com table: Faith Garriock of Destination ImagiNation.

I also just saw on Twitter that there are people following these awards from across the globe, which is amazing. I’m already in awe of the achievements of each of the nominees and knowing their reach and worldwide impact is nothing short of inspirational.

Update Emcee Sophia Lui (Global TV) took to the stage to do introductions before dinner — I was recently on a panel with her at a Vancouver Board of Trade Event. She’s always fun to chat with and is constantly working hard at her craft, something I really respect.

If you are not reading this via official Miss604 channels, this content is being reproduced without permission.
I have just checked into the Northern Voice conference at the Life Sciences Centre at UBC. Each year this blogging conference (probably the largest of its kind in Canada) features workshops and sessions about personal blogging and social media topics.

I have been attending for the last four years and each time I cover the event in a different way. I probably won’t be liveblogging all of the sessions I attend however here are a few that I am looking forward to today:

Keynote Bryan Alexander

Online Publishing & The Law with Dan Burnett

Copyright & Online Expression with Martha Rans & Hart Snider

OMGWTF The World of Chatroulette with Dean Hudson

… and many more (I’ll update the list for Saturday too)

I’ll be updating this post throughout the day and will pull in the Twitter feed from the conference using the tag #nv10.

Update Northern Voice is known for its conference t-shirts that read, “Bloggable”. Today we have the youngest attendee ever (and probably the cutest) sporting his own conference tee.

Update After a welcome from Darren Barefoot and sponsor shout outs from Julie Szabo we’re onto the keynote by Bryan Alexander.

The keynote is engaging and captivating so I won’t be liveblogging it (I’d like to pay closer attention). However, every talk today is being recorded on video and will be available for viewing later on. I’ll post links here when available.

Sans PowerPoint slides for his talk, Bryan immediately points out the giant chicken in the audience (yes, there’s a giant chicken mascot sitting here). He references a tweet posted a little while ago: @BryanAlexander I’m going to argue for the importance of mystery in digital storytelling and social networking, in a few minutes #nv10.

Bryan is quoting a few social media fear-mongering articles including one from Slate that says when you’re online, “You’re neglecting the people around you, sometimes at the risk of killing them…” This garners chuckles from around the room. Do you blame the post office for a bad letter? Do you blame the phone company for a distressing call? How distracted are we by social media – and is this a a bad thing? How important is design?… On Twitter people are using words such as “spellbound” and “wizardry” to describe Bryan and his talk – it was amazing.

Update I’m hanging out in the atrium at Northern Voice uploading photos and catching up with friends (which is also a great part of NV).

Update I’ve finally made it to a few sessions at Northern Voice including the one about Copyright featuring Martha Rans & Hart Snider. Cut and Paste is an online movie remix project by Hart Snider, here’s a clip of his:

While this is going on I hear Dave Olson is joining co-presenter Monica Hamburg by video in a moment for their talk about Finding Your Voice online.

Update Rachel Smith took some visual notes of the talks she attended, here’s her graphic for the keynote:

© 2004-2011 Rebecca Bollwitt - Miss604.com. If you are not reading this via official Miss604 channels, this content is being reproduced without permission.
Canada has celebrated 6 gold medals so far during the Vancouver 2010 Games and I’ve been fortunate enough to sit in on press conferences with two of the champions so far, Alex Bilodeau and Maelle Ricker.

This morning women’s ski cross medalist Ashleigh McIvor will speak about her golden experience on the slopes yesterday.

Heading into the press conference with her stunning gold medal around her neck she said that it was “awkward to walk with” but man, it looks good. The following is live coverage from the press conference…

The first person to ask a question asks her about her lucky charms. “I’m not usually superstitious but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to keep things going the way they are going at the beginning of the season.” She wore a necklace and carried a Buddha on her for luck throughout the season and so she carried those with her as well during her Olympic run.

“We’ve just had such amazing support – the government and OTP,” she said. “Standing at the top of the race course I had this crazy feeling – it was all coming together perfectly.”

Photo credit: John Biehler on Flickr

With regards to the weather she said she knew the other girls were probably getting stressed out but being on her home turf at Cypress (and being a Whistler girl) she said, “you have to ski by feel.”

When asked if she thought it would bring in a lot of young skiers she said, “Definitely. That’s one thing about ski cross right now is that it doesn’t have much on a grassroots level but hopefully we’ll get some kids coming over from alpine.”

After the qualifying round she said she went down into the stands to locate her friends and family so that after her next run, she’d know where to find them.

A student reporter asked her about playing a role in bringing ski cross to the Olympics, since she wrote an essay about promoting and including the sport. Although her essay never made it to the IOC, she said that winning the first gold medal as a woman in the sport was the proudest moment of her life. “I said to my coaches, ‘I can’t believe I won’ and they said, ‘I can’.”

“It’s such an honor to represent my hometown, my home province and my country on the world’s stage,” she added. Ashleigh handled a few more questions about beyond the ski cross race. “I just definitely would like to finish my education, do a whole bunch of heli-skiing,” and she also has taken on some modeling gigs.

“I have people emailing me saying I’ve inspired them or kids doing school projects about me… …I would love to develop ski cross at a grassroots level and get some kids involved.”

© 2004-2011 Rebecca Bollwitt - Miss604.com. If you are not reading this via official Miss604 channels, this content is being reproduced without permission.
Yesterday Maëlle Ricker won Canada’s second gold medal of the Vancouver 2010 Games and just like with Alexandre Bilodeau, a press conference is being held in her honour.

Update: Not only has Maëlle brought home the second gold medal on Canadian soil, she’s also our first Canadian woman to do so, and first female snowboarder to have that honour as well.

“There was a lot of support, I felt the Canadian crowd and the friends and family in the crowd,” said Maëlle to open the conference.

A host from Cool FM asks if she has any lucky charms. Maëlle replies, “I have a lucky loonie. There’s one at the start of the boarder cross [route] and there’s one in my pocket.”

She was asked in French what the first thing was that went through her mind when she won the gold. Replying in French she said that she was just so proud to be Canadian and the first thing she did was to try and find her mom in the stands. She also says in French that she could feel the pride and admiration of Canadians throughout her run.

CBC asks if she’s had more sponsorship opportunities in reference to her being on Blenz Coffee cups.

John Biehler just got up and asked her how she feels about being in Vancouver right now and especially going into the hospitality houses (she was at Irish House last night). She said it’s just an amazing feeling and there’s so much going on in Vancouver it’s overwhelming.

“I’m just living in the moment right now,” she adds after another question. “I haven’t thought too far ahead,” she just wants to keep racing.

“You had to move like a cat out there,” she noted in reference to the course conditions. “As the day went on the snow definitely softened up and became slick. The course was enjoyable in the finals.”

As Bilodeau remarked as well, Ricker credits the Own the Podium program with a lot of support throughout her training and for all Canadian athletes. She also says it’s amazing to not only see her own family but the Canadian family “in red and white” all around.

Another question from the audience asks what she’ll do now to enjoy the rest of Vancouver 2010. “I’m going to watch my roommate Sarah Conrad,” as well as other athletes in downhill, speedskating and curling.

She credits her big brother for teaching her how to snowboard and she can’t believe she gets to snowboard for a living. She is positively glowing. “Growing up I looked up to Olympians,” she says with regards to being a role model. She still can’t believe she’s up in those ranks now. Ever-humble, just like a true Canadian Olympian. I’m thinking she fits in quite well. “Je suis sur la lune.”

Maëlle will receive her gold medal at the ceremony tonight but just mentioned she’ll be hanging out at the Canada Pavilion on Georgia before then.

Update February 19, 2010 Maëlle will be signing autographs this Sunday, February 21st, at the Canada Post on Georgia Street from 2:00pm until about 3:00pm.
Update February 20, 2010 Maëlle will have a public appearance today at 3:00pm over at the Bell Ice Cube.

If you are not reading this via official Miss604 channels, this content is being reproduced without permission.
Tonight starting at 4:30pm the doors of House of Switzerland Canada will be opened to the public over at Bridges on Granville Island. The restaurant remains open throughout the games, serving up delicious Swiss creations but tonight, it’s all about the party.

I’m sitting in the back corner doing some blogging alongside over $200 in Swiss merchandise. I have a grand prize Lindt gift basket, some Zimtstern belts, Zimtstern hats, aprons, and a Lindt cookbook up for grabs. Come on by, spot me, tweet about this event, and I’ll do a draw around 6:00pm for the prizes.

As a bit of disclosure, I am here independently as accredited media for House of Switzerland. I asked if I could come live blog from their event and they enthusiastically said, “YES!” and offered up the prizing to boot.

Update: Chef Béda Zengg (whom I met in Switzerland) just dropped off this food. It’s probably better than you join me as soon as possible since I won’t be able to finish all of this myself. I have a table reserved for visitors if you’re able to come by right now.

Update: For the next month, the coffee supplier at Bridges is the Swiss company, Nespresso.

Update: French reporter and Twitter personality @GastonReport stopped by to say hello then I stepped outside to watch the opening ceremonies.

Update: Thank you to everyone that came by, which I believe was about 20-30 people just for the Tweetup at various times. Congratulations to Bev Davies who won the $150 chocolate gift basket and thanks to KLParrot, ArianeC, Photodreamz, VancouverLens, Raul, and more who stopped by. Bridges will be open daily and you can find a list of special House of Switzerland events on their website.

There’s lots more in store and if you do make it by, let me know how you enjoyed the experience (once you come down off the Lindt chocolate high). I’ll be back on Valentine’s Day for another one of their signature events.
