Add a Comment by Rebecca Bollwitt

Community festivals and holidays will take us outside this month, under the natural confetti of the cherry blossoms. Spring is here and so is another big list of events including dozens of Cherry Blossom Festival activities, the Surrey Party for the Planet, a selection of theatre performances, and the Stanley Park Easter Train.

Surrey Vaisakhi Parade

Add a Comment by Rebecca Bollwitt

The annual Surrey Vaisakhi Parade is taking place on April 19th, bringing together over 200,000 people in the community and beyond to celebrate one of the most important days in the Sikh calendar, the creation of the Khalsa.

This is one of the the world’s largest Vaisakhi parades of its kind outside of India and will feature live music, performances, lively floats, along with food and drink compliments of local residents and businesses. We’re so fortunate to live in a region where people of all cultures and religions are invited to participate in the celebrations of others. This will be a joyous day filled with great food and atmosphere.

Surrey Vaisakhi Parade Route

surreyvaisakhiparademapThe Surrey Vaisakhi Parade is scheduled to begin at approximately 9:30am on April 19, 2014 at the Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar, at 12885 85th Avenue.

It will travel along 85th to 128th and turn south, traveling down 128th Street until turning left onto 76th Ave. Looping along 76th until it turns into 75th, joining up with 124th Street. Heading north up 124th to 82nd Avenue until arriving back at 128th and returning north to 85th. The parade will conclude where it began, at Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar, at approximately 4:00pm.

Road closures will be in place from 7:30am until 5:00pm. More information is available online.

Green Glasses Giveaway: Vinylize and Cinematique

Comments 112 by Rebecca Bollwitt

Green Glasses in Yaletown makes Canadian-designed, handcrafted glasses using all natural organic, sustainable materials. Back in September I did a giveaway, when I was first introduced to Green Glasses, and I learned that they are non-toxic, phthalate-free, renewable and 100 percent biodegradable. Better yet when you purchase a pair, partial proceeds are donated to the David Suzuki Foundation.

The two latest styles in the Green Glasses lineup are pretty spectacular as Vinylize and Cinematique, developed by Tipton Eyeworks, each feature very unique materials — recycled records and film.

greenglasses

Vinylize: Handmade in Hungary by Tipton Eyeworks. Zachary Tipton discovered his father’s old record collection and had the idea to recycle the abundant material to serve a new purpose. The first series was developed from communist vinyl, salvaged from the Budapest flea markets. The durable pressings could still be played, even after half a century, but to insulate them from the effects of heat, they were fused with biodegradable cellulose-acetate using proprietary technology. Cinematique: Picture-perfect release, each handcrafted frame is distinct as they’re designed with recycled film. Classic styling, timeless appeal and perfect for round or oval faces. Available in tortoise or black and each is one of a kind as the recycled film in the arms will be different from picture shown. Watch the process from film to eyewear in this YouTube video.

Green Glasses Giveaway

Green Glasses is giving away one pair of Vinylize or Cinematique eyeglasses, or sunglasses, valued at $399 to one lucky Miss604 reader. Here’s how you can enter to win:

  • Post a comment with which style you would want: Vinylize or Cinematique (1 entry)
  • Post the following on Twitter (1 entry)
RT to enter to win Vinylize or Cinematique glasses from @ecospectacles + @miss604 http://ow.ly/vg4ih

I will draw one winner at random from all entries at 12:00pm on Thursday, April 10, 2014. Follow Green Glasses on Facebook and Twitter to learn more about their products and sustainability.

Blue Jays Home Opener Viewing Party

Add a Comment by Rebecca Bollwitt

The Vancouver Canadians, the Class A Short Season affiliate to the Toronto Blue Jays, are hosting a party at Mahony and Sons to celebrate the Blue Jays home opener at the Rogers Centre this Friday, April 4th.

bluejayshomeopenerCanada’s team is looking for a strong start to the season as they take on the New York Yankees, and the Canadians are rallying all local baseball fans.

RSVP here for the viewing party. Admission is free and there will be plenty of door prizes to be won. Food and beverages are not included.

Fans are welcome to join the Canadians, who won their third straight Northwest League Championship last year, at the Burrard Landing Mahony and Sons at 3:30pm with the first pitch scheduled at 4:00pm.

Stanley Park Lions Vandalized

Add a Comment by Rebecca Bollwitt

On the Stanley Park Causewey overpass, which offers great views of the Lions Gate Bridge and two large lions by sculptor Charles Marega, there are four smaller lions — two of which had their faces smashed off this weekend in a senseless act of vandalism.

One lion’s face was destroyed and the second lion’s face and paws were removed. Park Board commissioner John Coupar said the situation is disappointing. “Well, it’s a random act and an unfortunate act, and it’s just one of those things that shouldn’t happen that does happen,” he told CBC News. “We’re all saddened by it, but we’ll do our best to make it right.”

Coupar said it isn’t yet clear how much the repairs will cost or how long they will take. Vancouver police Sgt. Randy Fincham said investigators are going to work with the park board to find those responsible “for taking the roar out of these two lions.” [Source: CBC]

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Vancouver Police Department at (604) 717-3321 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (888) 222-8477.
