Canuck Place Gift of Time Gala: Kristian’s Story

Kristian was the youngest of three brothers. He was a sweet, charming and loyal young man, who inspired the people around him.

In June 2014, Kristian would finish his final day of high school at Vancouver College, not only with a well-earned diploma, but also with the Mitchell Ho Memorial Award. The award, given to a student who demonstrates care and concern for others, was created in memory of Kristian’s friend, who collapsed on the playground of Vancouver College in the spring of 2008. Mitchell sadly passed away weeks later at Canuck Place.

The day after his high school graduation, Kristian was diagnosed with cancer. His dream of attending university on a football scholarship and studying to be a veterinarian was immediately put on hold. After a brave battle with multiple and ultimately unsuccessful cancer treatments, Kristian was eventually admitted to Canuck Place, where he received pain and symptom management, end-of-life care, as well as counselling support from the Canuck Place clinical team.

When Kristian was referred to Canuck Place, he was already familiar with the program. This is the place where his childhood friend Mitchell passed away in 2008. Mitchell’s passing affected Kristian deeply, and he took it upon himself to honour his memory by using his favourite #11 for all his sports jerseys whenever he could. Mitchell motivated him to become the inspirational young man that he was, and #11 became Kristian’s symbol and source for inspiration.

Kristian passed away peacefully at the age of 20, surrounded by love. Canuck Place care still continues for the Domingo family, who receive ongoing support with bereavement counselling. Canuck Place counselling provides vital support to help families through their grief, equip them with tools to manage their mental health, and foster healing after a devastating loss.

The intertwined and heartfelt stories of the Domingo and Ho families, share a beautiful connection to the quality of life, love and care that they received from the Canuck Place community.

Joshua Beamish/MOVETHECOMPANY presents the world premiere of @giselle, a technology-driven, contemporary reinvention of the beloved romantic ballet classic, this September at the Vancouver Playhouse.

Where: Vancouver Playhouse (600 Hamilton St, Vancouver)
When: September 5 to 7, 2019 at 7:30pm
Tickets: Available online now. VIP tickets are also available that include a reception.

Born out of Reimagining Giselle, a shorter work commissioned by The Royal Ballet in London, UK, this full-length narrative work will be brought to life by ballet superstars from American Ballet Theatre, The National Ballet of Canada, and Pennsylvania Ballet. Directed and choreographed by Vancouverite and company founder Joshua Beamishthis innovative production will explore the connections and parallels between the original classical ballet and our understandings of love, sex, and relationships in a world mediated by dating apps, digital illusions, and fleeting encounters.

The original version of Giselle, which premiered in 1841 — by what is now known as the Paris Opera Ballet, is based on a German legend, and follows a young peasant girl’s journey through the many dimensions of love and betrayal. Giselle dies of a broken heart after discovering her lover, Albrecht, is betrothed to another. The Wilis, a group of mystic and supernatural women who dance men to death, summon Giselle from her grave.

@giselle updates the narrative to present day by telling the story of a character named Giselle who is betrayed, isolated, and ghosted by her romantic partner on social media. In a state of heightened anxiety, Giselle livestreams her untimely death. Later in the work, she returns to haunt her male tormentors in motion-captured animated data particles projected onto the bodies of the live dance artists, creating a haunting tension between live and digital realities.

The Dude Returns to Dude Chilling Park

In April, Vancouver Art House Society sent out a plea to help bring the dude back to Dude Chilling Park and I’m pleased to report that, despite a fundraising shortfall, the Dude abides.

The Dude Returns to Dude Chilling Park

In 2012, artist Viktor Briestensky’s replaced Guelph Park’s signage with an official-looking prank sign that read “Dude Chilling Park” which was a reference to Michael Dennis’s 1999 sculptural installation, “Reclining Figure” [Source: Scout Magazine]. Since that time, the natural cedar sculpture which inspired Dude Chilling Park (Guelph Park) has suffered extensive deterioration. In 2017 it was transported to Denman Island for much needed repairs and to be cast in bronze.

A bronze replica of “The Dude” has been created with help from The Mount Pleasant Community Association, 8 1/2 Restaurant LoungeThe Vancouver Art House Society,The Rio Theatre, R & B BrewingThe Christopher Foundation and The Vancouver Park Board. However, the project is still short of its goal so, what better way to welcome to the dude back to the park than to have a party!
