A New Park in Metro Vancouver

Add a Comment by Rebecca Bollwitt

Last week, Metro Vancouver announced the creation of a new 75-hectare (185-acre) regional park on the slopes of Grouse Mountain that includes the popular Grouse Grind, BC Mountaineering Club (BCMC) and a portion of the Baden-Powell trails within its boundary.

A New Park in Metro Vancouver

Effective May 1, 2017, the new park will become the 24th regional park in Metro Vancouver’s portfolio. In addition to hosting popular hiking trails, this area of the North Shore contains mature forests and mountain streams that are home to a variety of wildlife including black bears, cougars, barred owls, black-tailed deer and northern red-legged frogs.

North Vancouver District Mayor Richard Walton is pleased to see the area becoming an official park, and remarked, “This section of Grouse Mountain is very well used by the hiking community, and its inclusion within a new park will ensure that additional resources are allocated to make it a safe and enjoyable space for the public.” [Source]

The southern slope of Grouse Mountain, where the park will be located, was logged in the 1900s and trails were developed by hikers and climbers to access mountain peaks, notably the BCMC and Larsen trails. The Grouse Grind, a steep 2.9-kilometre trail up the face of Grouse Mountain, was added in the early 1980s as a climbers’ conditioning trail and it has gained worldwide popularity over the years as a challenging and scenic hike, with several hundred thousand hikers tackling its steep ascent each year.

In order to establish this new regional park, Metro Vancouver Regional District entered into a long-term licence agreement with the Greater Vancouver Water District, which has owned the land for over 85 years. Metro Vancouver also worked closely with Grouse Mountain Resorts on elements of the park near the base of the mountain. The park will be adjacent to the privately owned Grouse Mountain Resorts.

Hikers are reminded that the Grouse Grind remains under a seasonal closure and will be opened to the public when annual spring maintenance works are complete and conditions are safe.

Metro Vancouver’s Regional Parks receive more than 11 million visits per year. Residents are encouraged to celebrate this milestone by discovering a new trail, learning about wildlife or attending one of the many outdoor events taking place.

Win Tickets to Ballet BC Program 3

Comments 47 by Rebecca Bollwitt

Ballet BC concludes its dynamic 31st season at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, May 11-13, 2017 with a thrilling triple bill of cutting edge and inspired choreography by two prominent Israeli choreographers and Ballet BC’s Artistic Director Emily Molnar.

Ballet BC Program 3

Where: Queen Elizabeth Theatre (650 Hamilton St, Vancouver)
When: 8:00pm May 11-13, 2017

Program 3 features world premieres by choreographers Emanuel Gat, Emily Molnar and the Ballet BC premiere of Minus 16 by Ohad Naharin.

Israeli choreographer Emanuel Gat is applauded around the world for his work that “knows how to bend tradition with craft.” As the Artistic Director of Emanuel Gat Dance in France, his original voice is one of rare beauty and humanity that engulfs the stage with expansive spirit, architecture, intelligence, and intimacy. For this evening Gat will create a new 30 min work for the full company. Ballet BC is enthusiastic to collaborate with Emanuel and to be exposed to the many facets of his creative mind and choreographic craft.

Ballet BC’s Artistic Director Emily Molnar continues to investigate her work as a choreographer with the passionate and dedicated artists of Ballet BC. The National Arts Centre has commissioned Molnar to create this vibrant new work as part of ENCOUNT3RS, which pairs three Canadian choreographers with three Canadian composers to create works with original scores, in celebration of Canada’s 150th Anniversary. ENCOUNT3RS will be presented on the prestigious NAC Dance Ballet Series in April 2017 with the NAC Orchestra. Molnar’s creation, set to a commissioned score by the “brilliant musical scientist”, Canadian composer Nicole Lizée, will be brought directly to Vancouver audiences after its world premiere in Ottawa.

Ballet BC is thrilled to present for the first time a work by the revered Israeli choreographer and Artistic Director of Batsheva Dance Company, Ohad Naharin. Originally created in 1999 and set to an eclectic score ranging from Dean Martin to mambo, techno to traditional Israeli music, Minus 16 has been thriving on the world stage for years with a surprising playfulness that makes each performance unique. The work is distinct for removing the barrier between performer and audience and for its mesmerizing use of improvisation in connection with Naharin’s innovative movement language known as “Gaga.”

Tickets range from $21.25 to $91.25 (plus applicable charges) and can be purchased through Ticketmaster at 1-855-985-2787 (855-985-ARTS) or online.

Better Together, an active online community forum, designed to celebrate family meals, cooking, and trying new recipes, has just launched the 8th annual Hands-on Cook-off contest across BC.

This contest celebrates the importance of cooking and eating together. This year’s contest theme is celebrating and redefining “family”. Here in BC, family means something different to all of us and Better Together BC would like to see what it means to people across the province! Whether we’re married, single or new to Canada, breaking bread together is a grounding and deeply bonding tradition for individuals, families, and for communities. The Hands-on Cook-off contest is a fun reminder to us all to make space in our lives for being together.

The Hands-on Cook-off contest was inspired by research that shows that when families cook and eat together, kids gain many valuable benefits—including better grades in school, better physical and mental health, and better overall social adaptability.

Judges: TV personality and cook, Art Napoleon; Michelle Tang, Co-founder of Foodie Kids Inc.; Chef Paul Cecconi of Brodo Kitchen; Rebecca Coleman of Cooking By Laptop; and award-winning cooking instructor, Chef Heidi Fink.

Criteria: Judges look for creativity, clarity interaction, that x-factor, and most importantly cooking together and having fun- whether it’s kids and parents, or two friends. View the full contest rules and regulations here.

Prize details & value: Several cash prizes of $1,000 and $500 will be awarded in different categories to individuals and schools. Total prizes up for grabs are valued at over $4,000. Full prizing details can be found here.
